just a few questions

So I currently only have a 2 ch. rig connected to the tv. I have a sub, but I really only use it for watching movies or if one of my friends asks to hear "how hard it will thump". I am in the process of upgrading it to HT and using the receiver for a bedroom rig. I hear a lot about cutting off the front speakers and using the sub for all low end duty. What is the benefit of this? If you cut out everything below 80 hz. why not have nice bookshelf speakers and a massive sub or two? Why cut out towers to 80 hz and then use a sub?

As a separate question: Is there much to gain by using a preamp vs. my 2 ch. receiver? Currently I do not plan on bi-amping or bi-wiring so that is out of the question for years to come.

I have nice IC's, speaker wire, and that sort of stuff but curiosity has the best of me. I am so pleased with what I have now, that I have to wonder if upgrading will gain anything or will I just be spending money that won't get me anywhere. Did I mention that I'm not even 25 yet.....hobbies are a b!

Seperate pre and amp allows more flexibility, depends on what you want.

As far as 80hz XO, try it and see which you like best.

My xo is set at 60hz, SDA's are set to large and LFE is set for mains and sub.
