ALS? In NJ? You sure? NJ doesn't do ALS as far as I know. The only ALS units I know are the airlift units. Unless it's run by the medical center and not sanctioned by the state. Only BLS and Paramedics. If they do ALS, that's a fairly new development. Like in the last 5-10 years.

And what NJ Medical Center are you at? Because unlike Sal, I do realize that there are more hospitals in NJ that call themselves an "NJ Medical Center" than just the unit in Jersey City. UMD has several locations across the state titled as "NJ Medical Centers" and the learning hospital in Atlantic City is also called a medical center. But I think it's A.C. Medical Center.

I know University med center in Newark has some ALS transport rigs. John is right in that they are rare. and yes, it's done by the hospital but those rigs are still certified by the state. Again, in NJ as far as I know there are not many and for the most part still rolls with a 2 tier system

There are some specialty trasport rigs that fall under this too.

Oh, yeah, certified yes. NJ will do certification but all the vollys are state sponsored and the orgs behind them, whether they are non-profit like an American Legion Post or run by the towns, are state sanctioned, licensed and certified and get a certain amount of state money. NJ will not pay for a volly squad to be ALS certified and NJ doesn't even really have a standards doc for ALS. I think they use New York's certification program.

That never made any real sense to me. Especially since NJ has 10 trauma centers, none of them are lower than a Level 2 and three of the largest trauma centers on the east coast are here with the New Jersey Trauma Center University Hospital in Newark, Cooper Medical Center in Camden and AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City which is only a Level II but that's because they don't maintain a complete residency and learning program preferring to share learning and residency programs with other hospitals in Newark/Jersey City and Camden cause it reduces cost. Also, space is at a premium in A.C. what with the casinos driving land value up so size is a restriction. But they are less than an hour away by air from Camden or Jersey City and Christiana Pediatric Trauma in Newark Delaware.

You would think a state that supports so many advanced care level units would support ALS more than it does.

I'm at Jersey City Medical Center (Wilzig Hospital) and ended up being put on a BLS unit, though they do have a few ALS. From the dispatching perspective, Paramedic on board = ALS comparative to BLS. I work with dispatchers on protocol software that's designed to prioritize the responses so agencies aren't going blazing lights/sirens to everything from suicide to stubbed toe.

Went on 4 runs, last of which was a fatal GSW to the head 18yof that attempted suicide by shooting herself in the temple and had the bullet go straight through.....all because of her bf cheating on her....then i watched the ER swarm get a pulse, and were taking her to the OR to see if they could do more.

That's the way it is in PA too. - The next level up is with a nurse on board, or a NICU with a nurse and a Doc on board.
