QOTD: What is your preferred method of long distance travel?

Holidays are upon us...ah hell, we're right in the middle of them! Holidays mean traveling. We all will likely be going somewhere at some point for something in the next few weeks. The day before Christmas Eve is something like the 2nd busiest travel day of the year. So in lieu of the fact of holiday travel, how do you get to Grandma's house? Is it over the river and through the woods? Or are you leavin' on a jet plane?

Me, I don't really have to travel anywhere this year because my mother has assumed the holiday duties. So I'm just traveling a block and a half. But the funny thing is that between my house and the 'rents house is a creek surrounded by woods so technically I am actually going "over the river and through the woods". But I'll probably walk. If I had to go some place else, I think I might go by train if the distance was short enough. Going longer distances to say, Hawaii, would require a plane. Or a boat. Or at least a set of "swimmies" and flippers!

Mele Kalikimaka, folks!

So how do you travel for the holidays?

We're going by jet to Oregon, but with hindsight I would have driven it. We were concerned with snow where Bev's parents live, and weren't sure if our vehicle was up to the task.

We have pretty much sworn-off of flying for anything under 1800 miles. Just tired of the crap, extra charges, delays, the "hurry-up-and-wait" BS, etc. I much prefer setting my own itinerary, stopping when I want to stop, etc. We also enjoy making the trip, part of the trip.

I'm in that camp, but my limit is well under 1800 miles, maybe 1000 miles or so. I did drive to Polkfest, I think that was just under a G. after that I'll fly.

For LD, we fly. We use our vehicle for trips upto about 4-6 hrs of travel. Over the Xmas time...it'll be Nissan that get's us there.

If time weren't a concern I would drive EVERYWHERE that was physically possible. It may not be cost or time effective, but something about the open road and seeing corners of the country you would never otherwise see always appeals to me.

Unfortunately, time and money are both an issue so I usually fly. In particular I'll be flying to San Francisco on Wednesday to see my sister graduate from college, and we're all flying back home on Sunday for Christmas.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Lol I have no choice but to fly. Even at 13 hours it sucks balls to be on airplane that long. I did the whole flight from Japan to the east coast twice this yr, so tack on another 5 hours there. If I had a true preference I would go F18 any day.

Id rather fly if it will take longer than a day to drive there. It also depends on how long I am going away for or if I am taking my dog with me.

Drive. Never flown before. Took me 13 hours to drive to my sister's house over Thanksgiving. Probably would've been something like a 2 hour flight.

Drivin' is the way we go. Kansas, MI and all over WI is where I'm heading. If I could fly I would be seeing everyone else I would go with is deathly afraid of planes, we drive instead.

I prefer to drive... Makes me feel like I'm doing something, I guess... And really crappy snacks are the way to go... Grab yerself a tiajuana mama brand hot pickled sausage, a bag of ranch doritos and a mountain dew... Eat that as quickly as possible... you'll thank me.
