Since I did not get a resonse in the Speaker section, thought I would post here. Not sure if the RT3000 qualifies as vintage, but 10+ years makes it vintage in my books!!
I know this has probably been talked about before, but justed wanted to ask those of you with the RT3000, or contacts in the industry, where to find a replacement 8" driver (MW8500), found in the powered sub cabinet of the RT3000 set.
I already spoke with Polk in the US, and they do not have any replacement drivers for the RT3000, they said maybe only the tweeters. I was then referred to someone here in Canada, who services all Polk products, including the vintage stuff. He said he might have one new one kicking around at the repair shop, but I need 2 of them.
Furthermore, when I asked him for a spec sheet for this driver, he said even the engineers who built this speaker would probably not have it. Reason is because the only specs Polk ever released on a driver per driver basis were car audio drivers, because custom cabinets had to be built for them based on availability of space. For home speakers, no spec sheets were ever made for the drivers.
My plan, if I could not find replacement MW8500 drivers, was to take the specs to a place like Solen, who sell individual drivers of all sorts, and match it as close as possible. The tech in Canada, who has been with Polk forever, told me not to worry about the specs too much. So long as the impedance and power handling was ok, he said any decent driver would perform well in the cabinet. I was a little surprised by his answer.
Either way, if you could help me track down a pair of MW8500 replacement drivers, would be appreciated.
Thanks
Neil
