Polk Monitor 40's vs Infinity Beta 20's
I've had a pair of the Beta 20's for several months and I just got a pair of the Polk Monitor 40's for another room. Just for fun I hooked up the 40's to the same receiver as the 20's are on and started to A/B them with different cds playing. I was shocked. The 40's were clearer than 20's yet not harsher or brighter. The difference was shocking. I thought that the 20's were considered fairly good speakers but they sounded flat compared to the 40's. It's not that the 40's are brighter just that they seem clearer and cleaner.

Are these the same 40's you're selling? I had 40's for mains before I got the 70's. I liked them and if placement wasn't an issue I'd love to have them back for surrounds.

That is a bit surprising...I would expect the Infinities to have more detail on the high end? Have you done a complete break-in of those...because of the ceramic metallic sandwich cone and tweeter it takes a long, long time...much longer than normal to ease those things into a 'normal' listening state!

It was surprising to me to. I double checked all the wires. When I switched from speaker A the Polks to speaker B the Infinitys the difference was dramatic. Not subtle at all. Like a wet towel was covering the Infinitys. The Infinitys are broken in.Jerry

I think I'd sell the Infinity's if that's the case. That's just me...:D

I'm selling the Polks. Problem with the new Polks is that I have to sit smack in the middle of them to hear both speakers. If I sit off to one side I only hear one Polk speaker! With the Infinitys if I sit off to one side I still hear both speakers. The Polks must have a very narrow stereo image?Jerry -

That's very strange; never have that problem with my Monitor 30's...and I would've thought the additional driver would have improved the imaging compared to mine?- Jeremy

I thought that something didn't sound right. They were wired up correctly. I actually had to walk over to the other speaker to see if it was on. It was on and sounded fine if I was standing directly in front of it but if I started to move away from it the sound coming from it would rapidly disappear. I had to sit right between the two speakers to get any sense of stereo. Not so with the Infinitys.Jerry

That's interesting! I also have a pair of M30s around and have run them in 2 channel in my office a while back NO such problem...they image fine...the soundstage is plenty wide? Hmmmmm.....

I've got to agree with you about the 40s. They're a great speaker. I did a test similar to this, between the 40s and the 60s. I was expecting the 60s to go lower, as well as sound bigger. It was the opposite in fact, with the 40s clearly winning in the low end, and not losing much anywhere else.
