Cracked sub

I have a legacy Velodyne F-1200 sub I bought in probably in 1991. It has recently incurred cracks and a small hole in the soft 'ring' which surrounds the cone. The manual says the cone itself is a resin/fiber material. I can tell that ring is not rubber like what's around the cones in my SDA-1C's.

I left a message for the parts department yesterday but I guess I missed them by a few minutes. Since the sub is so old, is it worthwhile to attempt to buy replacement parts? If not, then I'd like to keep the price <$1000 and have it work well with my Polks. Combination of HT and stereo listening, room is about 15' square.

Thoughts?

probably foam, you can replace it for about $50 at a repair shop or DIY and buy a foam kit on-line.

You could contact the manufacturer and get it repaired.

If they don't have the replacement driver, try to find out the specifications OF the driver....WHEN it was available. They may or may not provide this data. If they don't, there are ways to figure most of that out, at least enough that you could find a replacement driver on your own.

This is why I totally loathe foam surrounds. They decay way before their time. While the original surround was foam, would it be OK for him to get it reattached with a rubber surround instead for more durability/longevity?

If it came with foam, it's best to stick with foam. Changing the surround material can change the characteristics of the subwoofer.

If it was a vintage loudspeaker I'd consider the actual woofer characteristics but it's just a subwoofer. If anything it may help tighten the response up.

I would consider replacement w/rubber I think KAWIZX9R is right it may change the driver (probebly tighter) but the driver will change sound with new foam anyway .
And unless the rubber is VERY stiff the change may be very slight , PLUS rubber = no rotting foam problems .

Just a follow-up that Velodyne has absolutely nothing to give me except schematics, which I asked for. I found a site which offers a fitted foam surround specifically for my model, or one which is a trim-to-fit with rubber. Won't the rubber soften with use like it did with the 1C mid's?

Depends on the composition of the rubber and it's certainly possible but if you can get another decade of use out of it....
