Got one! Micropro1000 from Fry's for $279

I saw the post in the subwoofer section, and was going by fry's anyway today to pick up an MP3 player for my niece. I had no intention of buying one(damn you club polk), but I was talking to their installer and he said they had about 6 and he was putting a new one on the demo floor. I asked him to check, and they only had one left other than the demo. I couldn't let that deal escape, so I pulled the trigger:o I just recently got a 505, and it fills my 1650 cubic ft room very easily, but I've wanted a micropro since they came out, and for $270, it was kind of a no brainer for me.

I bought it knowing I didn't "need" it, and also knowing it's strong suit isn't HT, but I figured I could at least sell one of my subs without too much loss. Yet another "calculated risk" by me:D Now I have a problem. That little sub is soo freaking cool, and sounds great with music. I wasn't expecting it to do as good as it does for HT, but...it is no slouch. Granted, it can't match the output of the 505, but now I'm thinking I need to sell the 505 and run two micropro 1000s. Or keep the 505 for HT only and the micropro for music only. The thing that really got me is the micropro's low bass response is so nice as I'm able to get better placement with it. Also it's not peaky like the 505, so the really low stuff is damn near as loud as the rest of the bass. And the detail and tightness, just wow! I suppose it's a good problem to have, but what do you guys think I should do? Should I go with two 1000s or one for HT(505) and one for music(1000). I think two of the 1000s could handle the HT duty and would be awesome on music, but the 505 can get pretty damned loud in a 1650 cubic ft room. Help?

Depends on how much you want to spend...I'm cheap, myself, so I'd do double duty....MicroPro for music....PSW505 for HT....also, no reason why you can't run both in HT--might be a little tricky to set up though!

Really? I thought about that, but figured I would be scolded for thinking such a thing, haha. What kind of set up issues? I can handle getting levels right, but I was afraid there may be issues with two totally different types of subs having some sort of 'cohesion" problems:confused: Would two 1000s be able to match the output of the 505? I really like the output of the 505, but I love the sound of the micropro. Should I just stop while I'm ahead? I don't have that much cash left to piss away:o Who else has had my "dilemma", and what did you do? Thanks guys!

That's a great price....wow. The munchkin of the MicroPRO series is really tight and punchy.

So, the consensus seems to be run the 505 and the 1000 then, right? You guys think I wouldn't like two 1000s better, or one 3000/4000? The 1000 has ruined me. Now all I hear from the 505 is BOOM BOOM, LOL!

I'm not a part of that consensus for sure. I'd sell the PSW505 and get another MicroPRO 1K. Stack them, calibrate and use it for music and HT.

It's not really a consensus..we were just trying to save you some money...the 1000s are very TIGHT and you could do double duty with two of them....remember though that really low LFEs are hardly well controlled in HT....they rumble and boom some even on the 2000 dollar+ subs...you may also be running the 505 too hot.

But if you have the money sure...sell the 505...a lot of guys on this site would buy it! and go with another 1000 or if you really want to spend; a higher model, because those are the real HT subs!

CNH - I understand your suggestion and support it since its a solid one. The PSW505 is one of the better subwoofers, so at least we have good decisions to commet upon. I'd still suggest ditching the 505 and going dual 1K.

I appreciate BOTH of your opinions:) I'm a little torn really. I can not spend another dime and have the two subs, and by most people's standards, they would fit the bill very nicely. If I could manage to sell the 505 for around $200 or so, and with the price Fry's still has on the 1000 I could spend around $85 more and have two 1000s. I was just really surprised at how much I liked the 1000. I fully expected I wouldn't like it as much as I do. Don't get me wrong, I think the 505 is a damn fine sub for HT, but OK for music. Or, I could sell both and get a 3000, but I think maybe two 1000s would do better than one 3000? It would be nice to have only one sub, but I know that would at least take a 3000 or maybe even a 4000. This is all assuming I could sell either or for enough money to cover whatever I decide to do... I know I don't like having the 505 and the 1000 due to placement and it just seems weird to me. Having one sub would be fine, or two 1000s would give better placement options. ****, I don't know what I wanna do:o This is kind of addictive, but fun just the same:D I really appreciate you guys' input and infinite wisdom on this one! I'm glad you keep hanging with me on the discussion, so please continue:)

I did it! I got a second 1000, and it was open box, so I got it for $255!!! I now have two Micropro 1000s in my set up, and me likey:D:D They may be best for music, but in my roughly1650 cubic ft room, two is really kicking ****! I feel EVERYTHING, haha! So yeah, the 505 is up for sale. Off to "rattle patrol" now...Thanks guys:)

Alot easier to calibrate if you stack and throw in a corner IMO.

You can spend days trying to make them sound good if you split up.

I agree stacking is great for subs but not the micropro subs. They tend to move all around due to the passive on the bottom. The top sub will fall off.

Yes they do like to move around, but I think I have found a good "fix". Are you guys familiar with the Scotch tape command tape they use for their plastic hanger thingys? Basically it's two sided tape that has a tab that stretches it when you remove it so it won't mess things up if you take it off. Anyway, the Micropros were trying to wander around, so...I put one "command" strip on the front right foot and on the left rear foot of each sub. They haven't moved since! I have hardwood floors, so this worked very well for me, and it's not permanent. Which is good, since I haven't finalized placement yet. I don't know if I'm ballsy enough to try that with stacking them though, lol!

No. Subwoofer output -> L/R Inputs on the MicroPro, L/R Outputs on MicroPro to the 505's Line level input (or its LFE channel if it has no L/R inputs), match levels with an SPL meter. Make sure they don't cancel each other out (tweak phase settings on the 505 relative to the MicroPro unless both are facing the same direction from the same backplane). Enjoy.

    Daisychaining FTW.

Could you imagine the pure bliss four to eight MicroPro subs, each on a dedicated outlet, all firing at the same time would produce? Of course you'd have to invite the cops in for a movie to entice them not to arrest you for disturbing the peace. ;)

That would be AWESOME! I only have two 1ks right now, so they are doing the "LFE split". About 4 4ks daisy chained, yeah that would do it!
