Do I need a preamp?

I'm using a HK3490 as a pre for some A9's along with a HSU sub driven by an Adcom 555ii. This 2 channel receiver is the last piece from my original system that I have since upgraded. I've read elsewhere that the HK has a warm sound and is fine as a pre but some people say a pre makes a big difference. What are some of your thoughts on this?
If it makes a noticeable difference I was going to spend at least $225 used and maybe $600 (or more) new. I've seen plenty of Adcom 565's which I could easily pickup but I really want a remote. If I decide I "need" one I plan on narrowing it down to a few good choices and then stalking them for a while until I find a screaming deal.

What I would do is find a local used seller or a shop that will let you take a preamp home and try it out in your system. There is a good chance that a dedicated 2 channel preamp will sound better in your system than a receiver, but why not try it for yourself and see!
