I've got to replace a x-over in an rti a9. All the drivers and tweeter must be pulled, and a plug in the back of the upper chamber which the mid and tweet wires go through must be removed as well. This plug is seeled with mortite. Polk cs told me this plug can be removed and re mortited in. Question is, what exactly is mortite? where do I get it, how do I apply it, and what is its consistancy? Is it like caulk or more like that great stuff expanding foam? Also the drivers have a thin foam factory gasket. Should I mortite the drivers as well or stick with the factory gasket? I'm a little nervous about taking on such a project so any help/advice is more than welcome! thanks ahead

You should be able to re-use the original Mortite.

I imagine it's a lot like clay. Probably like a soft modeling clay.

Can't say for sure since I've never used it though.

    Info on Moretite:
    http://www.energyfederation.org/consumer/default.php/cPath/21_392_1413

You can get it easily at Lowes or Home Depot

It is like a putty, slightly sticky and soft. You will need to pull off a cord of it, place it around the area where the driver mounts and flatten the Moretite pretty thin. If you don't flatten it beforehand, you may have to apply too much force tightening the screws which could lead to stripped screw holes or a warped speaker. Mount the driver and snug the screws. After a few days, after the Moretite settles in, you may need to re snug the screws and you are done. It is really pretty simple.

If you ever need to remove the driver after the Moretite is applied, the driver may be a little tough to remove as the Moretite is a bit sticky. You can use a thin L-shaped hex key to hook under and pull straight out to get it free.

I had to buy it at Amazon as my local stores did not stock it. It works for sure.

I always wondered why use mortite instead of just any old putty/mastic? Is mortite proven to have better damping for audio?

Pretty much any hardware store should have the stuff that looks like a 1 or 2lb block of clay made up of thin strips stuck together. Look in the window glazing/repair section.
