Greetings,
I just joined the forum recently. I started posting and realized that I never really introduced myself to the group. I live in the Midwest (Peoria) and enjoy quality sound reproduction. My first musical device was an old box record player with a badly torn speaker when I was a kid. Of course the sound was horrible from the torn speaker as if the ceramic cartridge was not bad enough. Over the years I played with different pieces of equipment including an 8-Track recorder. Sweet! Once in college, I found a couple local stereo stores that had high end equipment. I discovered the Polk SDA 1 and was in love at first hear. I swore I would have a pair one day. Of course the Klipsh horns they had were a close second.
Once I was employed I just never came across the funds to get the SDA 1s and then I saw the SRSs. Oh D**n, now I needed to spend more money but still didnt have it. Then came unemployment and more college and another new job. Now in more debt, I still could not afford the SDAs, but darn it, I had a product brocure and I looked at it often. Years later as I started to get out of debt, Ebay came along. I started looking at SDAs again. And would you know, my first Ebay purchase was a set of SDA1s. Rough cabinets, some bad drivers that needed repair, but man I was happy.
I then met another guy who appreciated good sound through the Pantera Club I am in. We got talking about stereo and I mentioned I had SDA 1s. He had told me that years earlier he bought a pair and they would not play on his Dynaco system and went unstable, so he blamed the speakers and took them back. Well, one thing led to another and he started getting in to the SDA also after replacing the Dynaco with a complete Adcom setup and at one point, he had 3 pairs of SRSs. He has had and sold almost every SDA made and many of the Monitor series. He has since moved away from most of the SDAs in favor of the Infinity R1B. But before he did, I snatched up a pair of the SRSs. So I now have both 1Cs and SRSs (originals). Of course, I also have some other smaller Monitors for surroud, garage, etc.
Both this new friend and I have worked over the years to improve our eqipment. We have both had several brands and models both vintage and modern. At one time I used an EQ to improve my tone. But as my equipment quality increased, the need for tone alteration went away. To the point now that I shun tone alteration.
As an electrical engineer, I tend to experiment. I have enjoyed making speakers, making amps, etc. One plan I have is to install an Infinate baffle sub in the HT room. I would also like to make a modern update version of Stu Hegemans Hapi RIAA amp. I have another friend through the Pantera club that has a HAPI 1 and HAPI 2. He had the opportunity to work in the audio industry in its hay-day and personally knew greats such as Sol Marantz and Stu Hegeman. I use him often as a source of information on the ages of technology. Oh, and my cars sound good too and use Polk speakers.
I understand that there is some activity in the Illinois area and would like the opportunity to meet with other audiophiles and experience other sound systems. While working with my fellow audio friend, I have found it fascinating how much sound can change from one component to another, even among high end equipment. I have also found it amazing how 30 year old equipment can sound as good and sometimes rival the latest tech.

Howdy, again.Political Correctness'.........defined
"A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a t-u-r-d by the clean end."

Welcome from across the pond.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

Welcome to the club....25 years of SDA awareness. Well you've got me there. In 1984 I was in Grad School in NYC...the only thing I knew about Polk was that Sam Goodie seemed to have chosen their bookshelves as his audio store speakers and that they had these 'funny' transparent seemingly plastic tweeters!!!
Then I bought a pair of newer Polks a few years ago and I was told that, hey there's a Polk SITE!! So here I am. After only a few weeks on this site; where you hear SDA this and SDA that and before you know it you're thinking what is all this buzz about SDAs and what in God's name is THAT--shortly after that you OWN a pair and you 'know'....learned a lot so far from the veterans, that's for sure....so I welcome your input as well. As an E.E. you would certainlly bring a wealth of knowlege here yourself!

Welcome again Dave, I'll keep you posted about the next Illinois (Rockford area) gathering and it sounds like maybe McLoki might have a gathering soon too.
H9"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!
