I would like to have pre-outs no question. But I think my 606 is quite adequate for my HT requirements. Enjoy your new rig, and if you just have to spend some money, c'mon back and we'll be happy to help! :)

Exactly. My 606 does everything I need it to do as far as HT goes. I can't imagine wanting to watch movies at a higher volume than I'm able to get with the 606.

The only reason I want to get a new AVR, is so I have pre-outs, and I can integrate my 2 channel and HT rigs with HT bypass. I only have room in my front soundstage for one pair of speakers, so I have to swap speaker cables around depending on whether I want to use my HT rig or my 2 channel rig. Once I have an AVR with pre-outs, and a 2 channel pre with HT bypass, I won't have to swap anymore wires.

I'll also have the added advantage of my front HT channels being amplified, plus I won't have to swap wires between my two rigs.

I'll probably add a 5 channel amp eventually to power my center/surrounds...but I don't really feel that it's strictly necessary. I'll get one when I don't have anything else to buy.

I don't really feel that movies are as revealing of external amplification as music is. The benefits are there...but nowhere near as dramatic. IMO, most AVR's are all you really need for a solid HT setup.

There are obviously exceptions though, such as the LSi series. Most AVR's can't efficiently power 4 ohm speakers, so in that case, external amps are a necessity.

I have a different viewpoint than a lot of people though. My rig is 80% music(through the 2 channel), and 20% movies/TV on DVD. Some people use their HT rigs a lot more than I do...so for them, a beefier HT setup would make more sense.

You've gotta figure out your priorities, and upgrade accordingly. For me, it's 2 channel, with HT being an afterthought. I've even contemplated selling off all of my HT gear, so I can get some more coin together for the 2 ch. upgrades.

I used to really care about my receivers having preouts. Then i heard Nikolas812's HT setup.

    I no longer care.

But i will probably still have an external amp or 3 when i re-do my HT setup. Because there's no better feeling than a stuffed audio AND tv rack. :p

Yeah Curt, we are in exactly the same boat as I think we have noted before. My VTL pre has HT by-pass and believe me, if I had seen all of this coming, I would have opted for an 805/6. I still may.

I have to do the speaker cable swap too, made easier by banana's, but still PITA. :o
