I used the Blue Ray version of DVE and also the D-Nice settings found on the AVS forum for my Kuro.

Note: Netflix owners can rent these calabration disks if that has not been mentioned already.

They both have strong points and weaknesses. I think Avia may be a bit easier to use but has some errors within it's encoding. DVE is widely regarded as hard to use. I haven't had any problem though. It takes a bit of practice and a lot of patience.

DVE's navagation is kinda goofy, and the BluRay is worse than the SDVD in this regard. But after using it a few times, you get the hang of it.

I used the HCFR free software: http://www.homecinema-fr.com/colorimetre/index_en.php, DVE, and the AVS forums disk along with the Spyder 3 to calibrate my Samsung ln52a650. I had to do a couple of runs before I got the hang of it, but it made a big difference.

I don't calibrate. I tried once, and didn't have the paitence to even finish. I like what I see, and figure I am OVERLY picky about the audio because of my music background, why bother.

I have a 73" CRTRP TV and had it ISF calibrated. Definately worth the cost. I used DVE and Avie for contrst and brightness but to do a complete job would have had to use better equipment and get into the SM. Somthing that was better to pay someone to do.

I also have an CRT RP-HDTV and have used DVE to adjust what settings can be adjusted but I haven't had the ISF done...and I KNOW that would give me an even better picture than I currently have...I've done my best to use the manual convergence and the picture is plenty sharp...but I know it can be even 'sharper'!

The disk, does, however improve things a lot!

I think a fair warning is due.

One who doesn't know what one is doing can eff up a set quickly jacking around in the service menu.

True. On the flipside, you can really make a set shine with correct greyscale and accurate EM convergence (advanced) which is not accessible from the user menu.

You'll also here some talk of "these don't work on DLP's, yada, yada" Bull puckey. Color is a bit challenging because of additional colors on the color wheel, just adjust color/tint to the best setting; you'll be fine. I have a DLP, it looks beautiful after calibration.

Very good, timely info. in this thread. After 5 years of owning a DLP w SD signal, the DirecTV man is coming Sunday for an HD upgrade. I will give one of these discs a try over the holidays...
