CS1 Center channel speaker question

I just bought a CS1 center channel speaker not realizing it was a 4 ohm speaker. I have a Sony STR-K840P receiver that is rated at 8 ohms. I know now this is not a good fit, but want to know if I will damage the amp by using these together.

Thanks.

The CS1 is an 8 ohm speaker and will work just fine with your Sony. Welcome to CP!

    This post on Newegg:
    Pros: Excelent sound and quality.
I rated it 4 because I had to match the impedance from 4 ohm to 8 ohm to be able to use it.
Otherwise it would be a five.

Cons: Wrong specs: it is a 4 ohm speaker that could blow your amp. Mine turned itself off a couple of times...lucky me.
Then I decided to measure the impedance and 4 ohms it was!

The manual does not list POWER RATING and it states that it is COMPATIBLE with 8 ohm systems (whatever that means). It sent my amp into the PROTECTED STAGE a couple of times so I decided to measure the impedance and it happens to be 4 ohms. I solved the problem with a transformer to match the impedance to the 8 ohms of my center channel and it is working fine.

Other Thoughts: As I was very surprised with the 4 ohm measurement I went ahead and measured every speaker in my home, most of them were 8 ohm except for the R50s...again they are 4 ohm speakers and did not get my attention before because my front channel accepts 4 to 8 ohm speakers.
If you encounter the same problem, do not usa a 4 ohm resistor in series as it would consume half the power, for example, in a 100 watts/channel, it would take a 50 watt resistor that would get very hot. Instead, use a transformer to match the impedance to that of your amp.
I used one with my CS1 to match it to my 8 ohm center channel and it works fine. So it is compatible with 8 ohm systems if you add a transformer...very tricky way of writing the specs for a speaker. Almost anything is compatible if you know how to adapt it.

thats b.s.....you cant effectivley measure ohms of a speaker with a meter, your reading accross a crossover etc.....you will be fine.

    It's ok baby... it's ok. :p

I think R50s have been one of the easier speakers to drive that i've had in recent memory. Maybe second to VS-25s.

I am guessing that is a gas fireplace ? If you dont use it, you could put either a long shelf just below the mantel piece but about the same length, then set other things on it, with the center channel on its side of course. Or you could put a shelf up just big enough for the center channel speaker itself.

It does show 4 ohms when you measure it with a ohm meter ,but you have to take in acount that you are measureing it with the built in cross over.

You can't measure actual impedence of a loudspeaker, with a VOM, at the binding posts. It's not quite that easy or every loudspeaker in the world would be incorrect.

The information that states the CS1 or R50 are 4ohm is 100% incorrect.

    Thanks.

As mentioned previously, no worries. It is NOT a 4ohm loudspeaker.

I read that too. I talked with Polk Tech, its like these guys say, you cant measure like guy in comment said.

He posted under polk forum under r50's being 4 ohm also.

But they are 8 ohm, and work fine.
