The day that will live in infamy

I always wear all black today in tribute of the day that will live in infamy. You may be saying, "That was yesterday - Pearl Harbor was attacked". I commemorate that as well, but today stands up to that level for me. I'd like to pay tribute to one of my musical heros, John Lennon, who was gunned down 29 years ago today. I will wear my "Beatles for President" button with pride today.

Pearl Harbor brought us into a war that killed over 400,000 Americans in the name of freedom. John Lennon was a Communist. Not sure how one "stands up" to the other.

I agree. Even mentioning the death of John Lenon in the same breat as Pearl Harbor is ridiculous.

WOW! That was uncalled for. Is this how you integrate yourself into a new community? By going Political when this type of discussion isn't allowed.

I agree it's an odd post from a newbie, but I don't really see it as politically motivated...

Yeah, you probably would ahve gotten a little more response had you not juxtaposed it with Pearl Harbor.

I was obsessed with John Lennon when I was younger; as I'm older, he just kind of looks like an eccentric hypocrite. Preached about no possessions while being a millionaire; talked about how much he loved his beastly wife while he was banging everything that moved.

I appreciate his music and from an artistic standpoint it's a shame that he was killed but he doesn't really get the deified status I gave him as a youth.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Eh, when I see the word Communist I usually think political.......maybe it wasn't.

The relation to Pearl Harbor certainly isn't how I'd choose to compare the death of John Lennon. So yes, I agree that was a bit odd.

Not trying to be political, I just found it odd that someone would compare the attack on Pearl Harbor (~3000 killed) to the death of John Lennon. I like a lot of his music and was appalled at his assassination. Just trying to put things in perspective IMHO.

    From Wikipedia:
Communism is a social structure and political ideology in which property is commonly controlled.[1] Communism (written with a capital C) is a modern political movement that aims to overthrow capitalism via revolution to create a classless society where all goods are publicly owned. [1] Karl Marx posited that communism would be the final stage in human society, which would be achieved through a proletarian revolution and only becoming possible only after a socialist stage develops the productive forces, leading to a superabundance of goods and services.[2][3]

So I guess my earlier comments could be seen as a political statement: My apologies.

Didn't mean my post to turn into this :) The 'Day that will live in infamy' is a play on words, because when I usually say it, they think i'm mistaken with a day. I also meant it as a tribute to John Lennon the musician and artist, not necessarily the man...take it as you will.

Agree though, I like the Beatles....but I think that John Lennon was an a$$hole. What happened was tragic, but I don't get the diefication that he has garnered. I also think his music, post-Beatles sucked a$$.

Both John AND Paul are/were complete ****. That is why George told them both to sod off. Their music however will live on, and thank God for that.

I am also in agreement that to compare or even reference The day of Imfamy with Lennon's death is inappropriate.

I don't like what happened to him, but I don't like using the same wording as the attack on Pearl Harbor. Poor form I think, even though it was unintentional.

Not comparing. Don't make something out of this. I was not comparing John Lennon to the men who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Your making a mountain out of a molehill. (Is that how you spell molehill? :) When I said, "It stands on that level for me" I was trying to pay tribute to music I love, and the man who wrote it...not trying to say that John Lennon and Pearl Harbor was somehow historically somehow relevant, etc. etc.

Interesting article in the N.Y. Times about Pearl Harbor and the Japanese notions of Empire that were strongly encouraged by the first President Roosevelt, Teddy, when Japan sneak attacked the Russian fleet in around 1904 at Port Arthur, featuring the debut of Admiral Togo.

Roosevelt was the first American President to get the Nobel Peace prize for brokering a treaty that pretty much screwed Russia, and was a major factor for the revolution that failed, and the later one that succeeded. Japan had secretly approached him to do just this, which he undertook (illegally) without Congressional approval or even notification.

However, Russia also had an idiot son on the throne, Czar Nicholas II, who could be called the major culprit.
