    Because it's old. ;)

Seriously, it could have simply died from old age, but also check for a bad polyswitch or fuse depending on what your model came with.

A quick check, swap the tweeters and see if the problem follows.

Ok, in that case the problem is not the tweeter. It will be either the polyswitch or the fuse depending on what came with your model.

Is it a good idea to just eliminate the polyswitch altogether, with a jumper wire in it's place? Mine is now shutting down the speakers often, with the right speaker making a scratchy, distorted sound from the tweeter almost all the time.

IMO, yes it is a good idea, but only if one is not in the habit of clipping their amp.

Correct, you will need to replace the poly with a jumper.

Yes we are and the way this year has been I'm starting to worry.:(

I guess we can't turn our own bodies volume up like we used to without disingaging our own fuses of what-ever they might be too, huh.:D
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

No, they most definitely will not have a polly switch. However, they will have a polyswitch.
