They got a lot of help from the Japanese speaker designers of the 70's.

The best speaker they ever offered doesn't come close to the low end performance of an AR-3a? Okay.

JBL was one of two major speaker manufacturers that Villchur and Kloss tried to sell their design to in the early 50's. At JBL they were told, "We've got a lot of talented engineers right here, and if there was anything to your work, these guys would've come up with it."

So they started their own company and within 3 years had 30% of either the US or world speaker market.
