rotel rc 1070 ,feedback noise

i have a rotel rc-1070 pre amp. when i try to hook up my audio out from cable box or tv to my pre amp all i get is static/humm .Why ? Is it not designed to play this audio ? I new to this. Thanks:confused::confused: Oh I have a rotel 1080 amp if it matters.

    Here's some possibilities:

    bad cable
    correct output jacks (on the cable box) and input jacks (on the Rotel?)
    bad output on the cable box
    bad input on the Rotel (try a different line-level input)

    Another possibility is a very different ground potential coming from the cable box. If so, then isolation of the cable line with a transformer is a good answer. Or, transformer the audio line side to break the ground.
