SDA 2A Upgrades

My plan is to start with the 2A's then do the 1A's and work my way up to the 1.2 TL's.

For the SDA 2A's the completed upgrades are as follows:

Replaced the foam gaskets with Mortite.

Glued foam insulation to the baskets to dampen basket vibration.

Replaced the tweeters with RDO-194's.

Upgraded crossover using

Dimensional Module -2 Solen 130 uF caps and a Solen 20uF Solen Cap
Stereo Module - 20 uF Sonicap, 12uF Sonicap and 2 - 2.7 ohm Mills resistors.

Removed the safety switch and the bypass cap.

They are going through burn-in this weekend. My next step before moving on to the 1A's is to figure out the best way to decouple the speakers from the floor. Any DIY suggestions would be welcomed.

I am thinking about using stainless steel or brass footers but I am really a DIY nut and would prefer to make something myself.

    Reagan,
I have some spikes I bought from Parts Express some time ago that I never used. They are not fancy, just plain old spikes and inserts. 8 total (2 sets of 4 each). Say the word and they are yours for free.
    By the way...SDA's rule.

Is there any reason that you want the 1A's over the 1C's? The 1C's are generally considered to be a MUCH better speaker than the 1A's.

I've got a pair of 2A's myself, with RD0-194's. I contemplated doing XO upgrades on them, but I'm going to hold off until I can pick up a pair of 1C's. If I upgrade the XO's in the 2A's, I'll end up selling them off and getting a pair of 1C's eventually anyway, so no sense in upgrading two pairs of speakers.

I probably will still apply mortite and dynamat extreme to my 2A's though. Those upgrades are nice and cheap.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the 2A's once they've had some burn in time! Enjoy!!

Reagan-A word of advice on spiking the 2A's...The pedestals have to be slightly modified in order to accommodate spikes, since they didn't have factory spike locations. You have to add a small block to the inside of each corner of the pedestal.

F1Nut gave me some good advice on that topic a while back...I'll see if I can dig up the post.

edit-Here's the thread with the info about spiking the 2A's.

I am the original owner of the 1A's. When I purchased them, (obviously) the 1C's were not in production. Unfortunately, my wife loves to use my 1A's in her "ambience" setup to provide backgound music for the downstairs area. They are improperly placed and hooked up shamefully to a very poor system requiring a graphic equalizer. I hate it, but I have resigned to live with it for the time being. I bought the 2A's just last year for an out-of-town apartment for use when I am out of town on business 3 nights a week. These are what I am mostly using now on my turntable system. My digital system has the 1.2 TL's which are awesome but have not yet received the cross-over upgrade. I would like to get a set of 1C's to eventually replace the 2A's. Thanks for the support.

Ahh, I missed the fact that you already owned the 1A's. My mistake.

In that case, by all means go ahead and upgrade. FWIW, I'd pass on upgrading the XO's in the 1A's, and just hold out for a pair of 1C's. Just my $.02.

The myesound spikes look impressive. I used TTSoundPoints for my turntable, but they would be too costly to use on the 2A's.

Wow! The 1C's are that much better? Now you have planted the seed...there may be no turning back. I will keep my eye out for the 1C's. I really probably should focus my attention on the monoliths though (1.2 TL's). Problem is, I don't get as much opportunity to listen to them.

Yes th 1C's are that much better. If you don't feel comfortable doing the mods let me know. I have done a bunch of mods on the cheap for Polkies. If you are comfortable there are plenty of good people here to help you through it.
    Ben
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
