(sarcasm is an art)

Well...
I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I recently had surgery to remove a piece of my intestine. Lucky me, I had a 1-in-3 million condition that helped open a hole in my guts and let some acid and whatnot leak into my guts.
Awesome, right?
Well, here I am 2 weeks later and I still feel like butt. I mean, I'm sore, the area around the staples is pretty infected and I'm battling a tough cold that has my nose bleeding and all that jazz. Basically, two infections and a surgery to recover from.
So I'm on short-term disability until the doctor deems me healthy enough to go back to work... Which I go to talk to him about tomorrow when I finally get the infected staples removed.
Meanwhile, I get a call from one of the other Art Directors at my workplace saying that she got laid off. Actually, she and two others got laid off, with a pretty good authority that there is to be a fourth within the week.
And today, while at home, checking my work email, I get a directive from my boss to giver her a call; "it is very important".

Guess I'm losing my job today fellas.

Considering the heavy student loan payments, pricey recent car issues, and having paid rent on a house... We don't have a lot of money.

(sigh)

Now I'll have some medical bills (that hopefully my insurance will be covering since it was while I was employed), and moving expenses, since we'll not be able to afford rent. And right before the holidays.

If things don't turn around pretty quick and a giant miracle happen in the near future, I'll have to part with my Polk gear just to make some temporary ends meet. If that is the case, which I'm certainly hoping isn't, I'll post that in the proper place.

Basically, I just needed a shoulder to lean on and a few ears to hear me out. Thanks guys. Seeing as how I am a firm believer in God, any of you willing to pray for my family and I will make my saints list. Any of you that don't believe... If you could just pretend and shout a quick word toward where we think Heaven might be in favor of my family and myself, well, I think that works too. After all just 'cause you might not believe in Him doesn't mean He can't hear you... and your loud speakers. Especially your loud speakers.

Good luck man! I do not know how far off base this is, but I would at least consult an attorney if they cut you loose while going through this illness. I believe there are some protections that come form short-term disability they may be in violation of if they do that to you now.

Crappy. I feel for you man, and totally understand what your feeling(minus the healing part). All will pan out in time. I might get tougher, but it will just make you a stronger better person in the long run. What is the reasoning they are letting you, or is it just a lay off? Being on medical leave, I do not know if you can collect unemployment, or will be able to after you are off of short-term disability. I wish you the best of luck. Try to keep us informed if you can.

    Take it easy,

My boss wants me to call her.
She wants me... to call her... to lay me off.
I spoke with one of the other people that got laid off... And my boss got all emotional with her and mentioned me directly.

    Honestly?
I'm not wasting my cell phone minutes to get laid off. Geeze.

...except, I guess I could turn in my bill and get reimbursed.

Oh, and my work email password changed... Hmm..

That's weak. Like cosmic, supernova, 5-alarm, Cop Rock weak. Why not just pass you a note in class with a YES, NO or MAYBE to circle and return back to her?

I hope it all pans out and things start going your way. In the meantime, just get it out of the way and dial her up. Maybe her mom will answer and tell you lil' Cindy can't come to the phone because she's busy drying her hair. Weak.

I asked a law student about this (because of a statement earlier in the thread),as I am about to be really poor and cannot afford a lawyer :)

Basically, I'm on short-term disability, not disabled. So there is no protection for me from getting laid off. If I was disabled, the only illegal issue would be being terminated because of my disability. I could still be laid-off, just not because I was disabled. Considering that there have been three other lay-offs, I'm pretty sure my loss of employment isn't due to the freak-of-nature issue that made me have to have surgery.

Also, I just tried to call her on one of her many cell phones for the third time to get this over with, but she's not answering.

    I swear...

Go by her house. I'm sure the curtains will be drawn and she'll be hiding behind the couch.
She's your boss? Seriously???? I know it's not a walk in the park to piss on someone's life, but it kind of goes with the position. You know... of "boss". Weak.

Yeah. I work... erm... but not for long... at a design firm.
The boss is the owner. She's what you'd expect of a genius designer from 20 years ago still in the field: really, really crazy.
She still is a great director, but her taste are beginning to show age. And her business sense is on par with that of a coconut or a small stone.
I've worked at a few other places and have been in the design field for awhile now fairly non-stop; I've worked at great, although small places.
This firm is not one of those places. It was alright and better than some.
My boss has entered into the office less than 15 times in the 2 years I've been there. She means well, but 'meaning well' can dig some big holes.

Monday I go into the office to hand in my keys, clean off my desk, and clean up my computer. I'll be dividing up my live jobs among the designers still there.
    Goodbye job.

Already started; my portfolio and resume are already live on the internet. I'm finishing designing my own targeted mail-outs to potential firms that I'd like to work for.

We're hoping for the Winston-Salem area (since that's the place where my wife and I are most happy).

If any of you are interested, though.... Or know of anyone that's interested, I'll post the URL and you can take a gander at some of my work.

That's tough to experience this kind of challenge anytime in ones' life. But when it happens during these holidays, it feels alot worse.I know.

It happened to me years ago. The manager of a store came to my house personally on Thanksgiving Day to tell me about it. I give him praise since he did do it in person and was genuinely sorry he had to lay me off.I found temporary work through a temp agency and months later that same Manager came and offered me a big raise to come back. I went.

I wish that nobody has to feel those feelings of despair during this time of year but I do think when one door shuts ,another opens some where else. They always did for me and for the better it seemed!

I hope the next door that opens for you will be a Blessing from above!
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I wish things were better for you. There's really nothing I can say that hasn't hasn't been said already. Just keep your head up and hope for the best. I was laid off from my job 2 years and was out of work for almost a year - it sucked. But I did find work eventually even though I took a slight hit in pay. I was lucky to enough to find work before the holidays so it's awesome be able to buy gifts this year. Not being able to do so last year was the worst.

I wish you all the luck in the world finding a new job. Hang in there...
