Hi folks,
I'm new to the Polk community. I have bought a pair of small black vinyl 2 way ported speakers. No label on back (but it looks like there was one, methinks). They are 10.5 x 6.5 x 7 and have a 4.5" woofer and a 1" which is an SL4000. One tweeter is bad and I'm trying to figure out if these puppies are a good deal. Polk will sell me a tweeter for $24 (cool deal you get 20% off for joining this forum--nice) and $5 shipping. The nice Polk lady told me they are mini monitors from the 90s. I found a CS150 on the vintage list that uses the same drivers, but Polk doesn't list mini monitors. I got them for $15 (but I can return them). I'm thinking these are way worth $45 total. What says Polk Peoples?

Jim

They sound like circa 1990 Mini Monitors to me. Some decent sounding speakers...but nothing to write home about. I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure my Mini Monitors have the SL4000 tweeter.

Is the tweeter mounting plate circular or square shaped? Pics would help

They're probably worth around $40 or so, assuming that they are Mini Monitors.

Just pull out the bass driver and look at the sticker on the back.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    Those are New MiniMonitors: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59477&highlight=MiniMonitor

Check the tweeter and driver model to be certain.

Oh ... and Welcome to CP, BTW!

Yep...those are circa-1990 Mini Monitors. I've got an identical pair. They're some decent sounding speakers...I was using them as surrounds for a while, and I was using one of them as a center channel for a while before I upgraded to my CSi5.

Thanks, all. So is $45 to get them working a decent deal? I'd be using them in my wife's studio outbuilding with a little Kenwood UD-303 compact system that I was using with some cheap speakers. Even with a broken tweeter, I could tell these were nice sounding little guys. Would I be better off getting a new tweeter from Polk or wait trying to find one used from a broken MM or CS-150 (I figure the woofer would most likely be blown on a dead speaker)?

    I'd say $45 is a fair price. I paid $40 for mine, and I don't regret it.

The SL4000 tweets pop up on ebay fairly frequently. I'm not sure if Polk still has them in stock or not...
