Musical Bookshelf speakers

This ad may be a bit premature but I figured I'd post it now so I get a chance to get any info/insight on any speakers that are offered or recommended to me.

Maggie's are going out (not yet sold) so I want to pick up some bookshelf speakers. Of course I'm looking at used, and don't care if you have stands or not...preferably not. I wanted to grab some LSi7's but I have to cut that budget a bit ($200) so looking for either a pair/or recommendations on something comparable.

If you've got a pair I might like, don't post it here just PM me. If you've got a suggestion, do tell. If you have some LSi7's and don't mind working something out, I'd be more than interested.

Btw, the system I'll be using is my sig and has sounded very nice with my Magnepan MG-1B's and SDA 1C's. These speakers will be used for music and music only, and will be paired with a MicroPro 1k.

Thanks everyone!

Yea, I posted on it but those questions are tough!

Funny thing is, I've been on the lookout for a pair for awhile now and those show up for a karma!

With my horrible luck, my name won't be drawn even if 10 different names were drawn lol.

I would consider some of the older Polk monitor line, but other than those and some LSi's or RTA's I'm looking at non-Polk bookshelf speakers.

What a predicament it is indeed ;)

Although quite a bit out of the price range...some of the most musical bookshelves I've heard are the Focal Profile 908s (a 2-way 6.5", 1" inverted metal dome tweeter)...very nice.

    But not 2, 4 or even 6 or 800 dollars a pair...try higher!

    Kawi,

I have some ADS L620's which are a large bookshelf that I think sound great.

I am only selling them because I bought some ADS L810's and have too many speakers (if that is possible).

I'm a Polk guy, but there is something about the ADS sound.

Would like to get $125 for the L620's (what I have in them). They are in nearly perfect condition.

    Thanks,

You may be looking for something newer/higher end than this, but I use rt7s paired with a musical little sub and I really like the combo for music. The rt7s are LARGE bookshelfs, but they sound really good. Several guys here think that they are polks best bookshelf after the lsi9s. They come up pretty regularly (once or twice a month) on ebay and usually go for about 150 shipped.

Look for a used pair of EPOS ELS-3's. With the new ELS-8's out now, the price on the ELS-3's on the used market is now right in your referenced price range. Prepare to be surprised.

Regarding B&W's it's either a love it or hate it. I heard bad things about their tweeter but honestly I think my system would tame it...it's pretty damn warm sounding.

I won't buy anything just yet, considering I haven't even sold my Maggies yet. Just looking around at options and whatever poses to be a good deal. I'll get my ears on them don't worry!

I can't remember what Focals they were but there were 2 different pairs on the 'gon for about 250-300 I was looking at. Unfortunately they're now gone.

I've heard good things about 'specific' models by ADS. I would rather hear a pair before buying them or passing judgement though.

Those RT7's are nice speakers, heard them rocking out to some Mushroom Head, Tool and other heavy stuff I like. Messiah has a pair, and on some nice stands too and I was blown away by them. One of these days I'll find a pair, I missed the set for $50 bucks in my CL area.

    Greetings!

My B&W's are the DM601 S2 model. They are barely used, original boxes, packaging, etc. The ones selling or that have been sold on eBay in comparable condition are $285 and higher. If you are interested. I'll dig them out and take pictures.

B&W love/hate? Any B&W speaker that I heard that didn't sound good was due to amplification or source, not the speaker. YMMV.

There was a pair or 2 of those on CL for awhile (Chicago CL tends to carry everything) and I actually asked forum members here about them. They told me to pass because I won't like the harsh metal tweeter. Not saying your price would be too high, but they were up for about $100 and I didn't bother with them.

Nice choice...ADS is a really nice, warm loudspeaker.

Kawizx9r - Look for anything from the newer lineup of Mission or KEF is you want to try something different, for a modest price. Go used.

I had a pair of Paradigm studio 20's which really impressed me. They have a couple of new lines I think, but havent really checked them out recently. There are some 3se's on CL right now for 65 bucks:

Not going to beat Maggies or Lsi's, but they are cheap, local, and bookshelves. At least worth a listen.

I found a pair of KEFs on audiogon/craigslist (same seller, same pair) and I emailed him on both counts but never received a response. It was for a pair of bookshelves that utilize the new Q woofer or speaker setup.
    leroyjr1 wrote: »

Those are actually on audiogon as well, and they were even posted for much more. What sucks about Chicago though, is that everything comes off as if its local....when in reality about 99% of those ads are outside of Chicago, even as far out as Indiana :(

I saw those as well, and I did email the guy about him and since then he edited the post and added pictures. The scratches are a bit too much for me to bear, but they are pretty damn cheap.

I do have a question about some SDA's though. I'm inquiring about a pair of SDA 2's (2 tweeters aligned horizontally, 3 mid-bass drivers, passive radiator) and wanted to know from an experienced listener what the difference is between that tweeter alignment and the later vertical alignment. I'd preferably like to hear the differences between those and a pair of SDA 1Cs at least since I know how those sound having owned them for a few months. Is it worth bothering for, even at 165 (I might have to replace 1 mid-bass driver, thats it) or should I just pass? I talked him down from 225 but that was because he doesnt have the interconnect cord (which I can make), one of the drivers doesnt look stock, and theres a stain on top of the cabinet which just made it look a bit darker than the original walnut color. Any advice is appreciated.

Freddy - if you wanted to make the trip out to Belvidere at some point I can rotate you through a listening session with the following - EPOS ELS-3, LSi7, LSi9, Paradigm Studio Ref 20v3, AV123 ELT-525. I have the Magnepan 1.6QR also, however it's real hard to swap speakers in that rig. I'll have to get my other pre-amp back from a local RAS member to set up a 2nd system, so would need a little lead time.

Man, that's one hell of an audition if I make it out there. I've looked at pairs of Paradigm Studio 20's, and they look promising but they never come up for sale and if they do it's usually the newer more expensive pairs.I've heard those Maggies so don't worry I wouldn't need to listen to them anyway lol.

Belvidere is about an hour away so, let me give you a few days notice because I would like to listen to some new stuff. Plus meeting Polk members is always fun.

I've seen alot of items offered by Kingpin AV but haven't heard a damn thing about them. Yes I know for alot of you, the aesthetics would be a huge problem (certainly will for me) but maybe they'll offer a pair that's not so challenged cosmetically? If anyone's got direct experience with them, do tell but honestly speaking I might just disregard them completely.

Oh, as for the SDA's I just thought I'd pass. Guy got upset with all the emailing back and forth.

Hey Freddy. if you're looking at those sda2's on CL dont bother. They are pretty much junk or I would have grabbed them. Bad cabinets, wrong woofer, no interconnects.

    :(

Then maybe you suggest I don't go? I've gone back and forth through more gear in the past few months than I have years before this after hearing a few rigs. I'm chasing after better sound for the music I love. From the sound of things, it looks like I'll be leaving Doug's house with a big void to fill.
