Volume knob on preamp

I just wanted to ask someone. I have long since lost my remote on my very old NAD integrated amp and so I have to turn the volume knob manually. I noticed that there is not much sound coming out of the left speaker but when i turn the knob to the second notch, sound comes out of the left speaker. Is it because the inside of the "pot" is dirty? I am planning on buying a new preamp anyways very soon. Does anyone know how to solve this?

Can you recommend any cleaner? And how would I clean the volume control?

Caigs Deoxit works very well. Radioshack has a generic version that also works well.
It depends on the type of pot that's used, but generally you have to clean them from the back side. Open the top up, and you should be able to see the pot inside. There should be some kind of small hole or opening that you can spray the Deoxit in.
Caigs website has a big FAQ about how to use it properly. The nirvana inducer-
