I have a few greatest hits that sound ok, but the majority of them sound thrown together with audio quality as an afterthought. One off the top of my head is Seal's first album, when tracks are compared to Seal's Greatest hits--now this one is pretty good (better than most) but the same tracks on the original album sound better; more impact, more bass, more air, and treble sounds more extended and natural. Kansas greatest hits usually sound much worse than the originals too, but the original "Point of Know Return" sounds like crap right out of the gate---so comparing that album is difficult at best. It's a shame that Point of Know Return was done so poorly, I love that album.
Lately I have been on a mission to replace all "greatest hits" CD's with the individual albums. I then use the greatest hits CD's as beer coasters in the 70's mancave.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
I am glad that you are changing them out for originals. But I think the greatest hits can be just as good if not better than originals. I think a lot of greatest hits are just burned from the originals while others are remasters. For me I will keep my greatest hits. I honestly think from what I have heard and compared today on my neighbors system that they all sound the same. I also tried them on my fathers as well.HT setup

When I get a GH album, I usually get it because it contains 3 or more of the artists selections that I really want to hear or have in my collection. This saves me from having to buy three separate albums but in my experience, 95% of the time it comes at a cost [compromise in sound quality]. YMMV, depending on the artists you choose to purchase.
What really drives me nuckin' futz is when I purchase an album and the ONE song I bought it for sounds like crap. Most of the album sounds great but the one damn song I bought it for..............~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~
