I didn't either last time I went out looking for one. My linksys wired router gave up after faithfully serving me a good 8 years or so, so I picked up a new Belkin wireless router. Good thing is, if I ever needed to run a CAT45 cable....it has 4 ethernet ports so I can run both wired and wireless. I'd say grab one of the wireless models anyway, they'll have the best of both worlds.

First, there isn't much demand for consumer grade wired routers, which means they aren't as discounted as wireless routers.

But also, the vast majority of the "stuff" in a wired router vs a wireless is the same. They still both need a microprocessor in there doing all the handling of addressing, and they need a switch doing all the switching... the only thing the wireless adds is a couple antennas and a 802.11 radio.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I just bought a Belkin N+ wireless router and adapter for my PC. Works great so far. Running CT5 cable in my walls didn't appeal to me...

Might as well get a wireless, you can turn it off if you don't need it. This one has free shipping, less than any wired router they list with shipping:

Hey, I needed a USB charger to power a wireless system. Got one at Rat Shack for $24 and later that week got another on line (exact same item) for .98 CENTS + 2.98 for shipping and handling. WTF . . . ripped off or what?

Never go to staples/office depot/etc and buy computer stuff! Unless they're running some kind of crazy sale, which rarely seems to happen any more, you're almost always better off online. The only time I'll pay retail is if I'm doing a job for a business and they need it right away.

That is a good deal at newegg. Buy the wireless and just shut off the wireless. The last one I bought had the wireless shut off as default.

My experience with the router posted earlier from newegg is not good. It drops the connection a lot and requires a reboot.

For wireless router, I prefer anything that can accept dd-wrt.

That's what I'm looking for. I want a wireless N router that can accept dd-wrt so I can use it as a client bridge in the living room (dvr, ps3/netflix, etc). That and I don't want to pay >$50. Still holding out and looking for one. Don't even want a fancy one, 2.4GHz non dual band is fine since I don't seem to get through walls well with 5GHz.

Wireless N routers are still pretty new, looking for under 50 bucks is pretty ambitious.

the deals are out there, I just need to catch one. Staples is selling a refurb Linksys WRT160N for $44. If I knew for sure I would get a v3 which is dd-wrt capable I would order. Last week or so I missed a deal on an Asus RT-N16 for around $40 new.

n routers have been around for a couple years now. It was just recently finally "approved" or whatever, but the products are not exactly "new".

IMO if you're going wired (I'm mixed wired and wireless) go gigabit or go home.

Transferring large amounts of data from one computer to another is much faster at 1000Mb/s vs. 100Mb/s (duh!). But if you don't need the extra speed then don't worry about it. But most WiFi routers are 100Mb for the wired ports.

Here's an 8 port Netgear model for $35 after MIR (free Shipping)

    D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N Router - $19.99 Free Shipping @ Newegg

DD-WRT is still "work in progress". I'm tempted.

I purchased this one about 2 months ago and it is working great on my fish tank.

I updated it with dd-wrt and uses it as a client-bridge. I guess it's a discontinued item on Newegg. See if you can get one elsewhere.
