I Just upgraded my tv to a 46'Sony Bravia that came with a sony blue ray disc/dvd player. I had went to American TV store and listened to some polk audio speakers that sounded great. I really don't understand the 5.1 channel and the 7.1 channel. What is the difference. Also was is the best receiver to go with it. I also need to hook up a WII system to it. Any sugestions?

    5.1 channels mean 2 front speakers + 1 center speaker + 2 surround speakers + 1 subwoofer

    7.1 channels mean 2 front speakers + 1 center speaker + 2 surround speakers + 2 rear speakers + 1 subwoofer

You select either 5.1 or 7.1 setup depending on the allowance of your listening environment (room size - seating locations - speaker locations) as well as your pocket allowance :D

About the AVR, you should go with one that supports HDMI input/output and lossless audio. Let the guys know which speakers you are gonna get and they will suggest on which AVR to go with.

That sums it up pretty much...keep in mind MOST movies are still only 5.1. If you get a 7.1 AVR you can always add speakers down the road, or use the 2nd zone for your deck, balcony or whatever. Welcome to CP!

If you are playing blu rays most of the newer movies are 7.1 surround. They say that it allows you to have a more in depth audio experience with the movies. Personally I can go with 7.1 but have not yet because I do not have enough cash for the side speakers.

I don't know about this claim. Mostly I saw 5.1 as the norm.

Unless your room is big enough, and set up just right, 5.1 might still be the better option.

I have also seen very limited numbers of movies (Blu-Rays) that are formated in 7.1, Almost all of them are still in 5.1. The switch to 7.1 may come in the future, but probably not for awhile and will happen gradually, IMHO. You can still get a 7.1 AVR and be ready when the time comes, as suggested above. I agree 1000% with Christopher (Messiah) if you don't have the room for a 7.1 setup, you will gain nothing by trying to cram an extra 2 speakers in there, IMHO it would only make it sound worse. A properly setup 5.1 system will sound much better than a cramped up 7.1. Welcome to Club Polk.

    Some factors to consider...

I agree that if your budget allows you you should be getting the 7.1 to be as future proof as possible with your gear. As far as 5.1 versus 7.1 if room is small as far as I am concerned, this would apply for larger speakers (IE: towers) were placement might be of a problem. I personally believe that when talking about HT (nothing to do with music rig), I feel you are better of with many small speakers than only a few large ones as it fills the room much better thus giving a better feeling of realism. Having more speakers layed out across the room will also allow you to keep the volume lower for the same loudness thus easier in the receiver. This might not be shared by everyone but is simply my own opinion.

    Cheers!

Oh, I'm planning on keeping the HDDVD collection and player. My reasoning is to scoop up all the glorious HD content for them for pennies!
