Can anyone tell me anything about these Planars on Craigslist?

Is it a good deal and what model are they?

Nik, those look just like mine! Everything to include the rear binding posts/etc. except the color of the sock. I sure as hell love'm, and they're cheaper than what I paid but not sure if they're your kind of speaker. They're part of the MG series, ask if they're the IMP or the II's...Magnepan came out with an 'improved' version.

I would give them a go Nik... the delam can be fixed fairly easily, as handy as you are. What is the production date on them, as I may have built them.

    I wouldn't buy them.

Not for all the same reasons, but if it has delaminating issues/etc. then it's not worth it. Grab a pair of MMG's or better if you're starting off, especially the 1.6's. They maintain their resell value as well if you don't end up liking them.

Lately on the gon there's been a few nice scores but they all sold within 2 days each. :o

    The man has spoken.:D

I have already sent here and offer of $125 though...

She said she has another party intersted and if they pass
on them she will entertain my offer.

If she takes the $125 should I still pass? She said I could audition them first too..

    Production date was 1984

I wouldn't bother honestly. My pair is also from 1984, and the only reason why I purchased them was because they are in mint condition in every way.

Otherwise, the delamination issue is pretty ****....just pick up a used pair of newer maggies if you want to get your feet wet. Look at those I mentioned up above :)

I betting Kawizx9r's Magnepan are wonderful but this is just one speaker you can't snatch up without a solid demo. Coupled with the fact they have a known problem makes it just not worth the time. De-lamination happens in the vintage models and it can be repaired....BUT sometimes that's not the only issue when you start rebuilding them.

Keep your eyes peeled for the SMG/MMG used as you can usually get into them for a small increase in price. 300-375.

Hey Nik, in case you see another pair come up and are unsure of the model or unsure about the specs check this out - http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/articles/speakers.html

    +1 SMG/MMG's.
As years went on, they simply got better and better.

Can you repair them? I heard a pair of the MMG's last week and was very impressed and they're only $599 brand new. They will be my next speaker.

If the Mylar is not damaged, it is a fairly easy job to repair these speakers.

I paid $50 for the repair kit straight from Magneplanar. The kit included new tweeter wire (old one rotted/rusted and fell apart), silver solder, new inner connecting terminals for crossover parts and the UV protecting adhesive. All I had to buy was 3M spray glue.

The repair was very easy. I upgraded crossovers, socks and refinished frames in my MGII speakers. If the tweeter/bass wire "ends" delaminated, all you would have to do is clean mylar, then spray the speakers with 3M glue (re-attach the wires), then apply the new UV protecting coat, and you are all set.

IMHO, Maggies have the best, wide-open and transparent sound-stage out of all speakers. As soon as I will have a chance, I will upgrade my MGII maggies to the ones with ribbon tweeters (MG-2.5/R). In my opinion, the main negative about older maggies is that they roll off too quickly at the top, but addition of the ribbons in the later models fixed that problem.

I don't see why not, as long as I have the proper materials, it should be a piece of cake.:)

IIRC, Magnepan will not ship repair kits in the dead of winter, something about if the glue freezes, the kit is no longer any good. So if you do pick them up, you should order the kit soon.

As I recall, they did have a bunch of bad glue come through the doors in winter. The factory was in Maplewood MN, and I used to ride my bicycle to get there, and sometimes a snowmobile...
