Polk Monitor 10s price hike?

I have a local guy who has some nice/not mint 10s listed for 400 bucks. I suggested that was a bit high (like by double). He showed me 2 ebay listings with "buy it now" for $350 to 395 (that covers shipping).

Isn't there a way to search past ebay sales.

There was a polky website that use to track sales on ebay but I doubt that is current anymore.

The guy can charge whatever he wants for sure, but suggestions on how to get him down to reality...I have bought minty ones for $100....rare find...but still...

thx....Mike

There is a guy listing a pair here on CL for $300.

But then again I saw a pair listed for $25 a few weeks ago and they looked to be in real nice shape.
I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

I saw those too, Mike. You failed to mention that price included the stands AND speaker cable. HA! Looks like one of the tweets has been pushed in as well, probably fixable with some well chewed bubble gum (Bubblicious works best).

Did you see the RTA 8t's a few weeks back? They sold pretty quick at $150.

    You mean besides myself?

I picked up a pair of SRS2's about 3 weeks ago and have been running down parts for them. All the drivers are in good shape, I will be reworking the x-overs and replacing the grill cloth. My father is refinishing the wood end caps and side panels.

I watched Star Trek just last night, pretty good flick. Will keep my eyes peeled for some 10's for you. My sister has a pair I sold her several years ago, nice shape don't know if she would sell. I can ask her if you like. They have them in the basement (finished) and rarely listen to them.

Do a search as usual in eBay. On the left side, scroll down to Preferences>Show Only: Click "Completed Listings".

Lots of people price things way too high on eBay. Using other ebay sales as a reference is not a good indicator of current market value. Especially when the two BIN listings haven't even sold yet (and likely won't for that price IMO).
Even using completed listings is not the best indicator since some may not get many bids and they win low, sometimes because the sales are local pick-up only which limits possible higher bidding.
If there are a lot of sales and the selling price does fall into an avg ballpark then perhaps.
I'd say between $60 and $150 is fair (I personally wouldn't pay more-not saying they're not worth more), but that also depends on the condition, the type of tweeter installed, and if it comes with the Interconnect cable.
With that guy's listing, you also have to consider that shipping those speakers is not cheap so if he's building the shipping price into them....Also shipping is not really a good idea unless the vintage drivers are packed and shipped separately and well packed to prevetn any magnet shifting and frozen drivers.

I saw a pair of 10As go for $339 on ebay so yes they can and do sell for higher prices. I think 10s are one of the best speakers ever made for the money. I know the market is usually in the $100 to $200 range but I do not think $300 is out of line. Think about what you would have to pay in a store to get equal much less better sound. I have seen 10s eat up speakers in the $1200 plus range. Young sales people with their jaws on the floor, older guys who had been around and knew better and were not surprised at all. It is all in what people are willing to pay. keith

To the right person, the speakers can be surprisingly pricey. Those $350-400 eBay's seem to be in near-perfect condition and include, at a minimum, the original stands. Call it $50 for the pair of stands and $100 for S&H. If they're not perfect, I would refuse to pay >$100. But yeah, as has been pointed out, having BIN set at $400 doesn't mean that they'll sell at $400.

That's way too high. Sure, there are a couple listed on ebay at similar prices right now...but there's a good reason that they haven't sold yet. They'll sit there for a VERY long time before they'll sell at those prices.

I've seen Monitor 10's sell in the $50ish range...all the way up to $250 or so for a pristine pair with original stands, boxes etc...

I'd say the average price for a nice pair would be around $125-175.

For instance...here's a nice looking pair of 10A's with Peerless tweets on ebay with a BIN of $85. That's a very nice price...even when you add in the extra $80 for shipping.

Here is the website that lists past ebay sales. It's out of date but the average is around $200.

There's a pair in my living room right now that were bought for $65 but they are beat up and have 4 locked drivers.

Mint 10's go for $300 on ebay, that's been the norm for the past couple of years, of course if you find somebody that did no research you can find them for $80 but it may take a long time.

Correction...Mint 10's get listed on ebay for $300...I've yet to see a pair actually sell at that price though.

I wouldn't pay over $150 for a pair of mint Mon10...maybe a few bucks more if they had original stands or boxes.

I paid $100 for each pair of polk speakers that I own.

The 10s were good condition - someone used pledge a lot on the vinyl cover and they feel a little sticky

The 7s were mint and included the original stands now being used on the 10s.

and the SDA-CRS+ were in fair condition - cosmetic - and they may have been $90.......not sure......

$300 is way too high for monitor 10's. Not that they're not worth it but at $300 you're creeping into sda territory.

Can you elaborate on this comment? Why would a magnet shift and what causes a frozen driver? After all, these things were once shipped "assembled".

The glue that was used to attach the magnets to the spiders can dry up and wear out over time...if it gets a hard enough shock in shipping it can cause the magnets to shift, which is nearly impossible to fix. I've yet to see a shifted magnet be successfully fixed on a vintage Polk driver.

They've been shipped successfully many times, but having the actual drivers packed separately is a very good idea.
