Are monitor 5b's anything decent? some guys got some for only $55

Oh, this is my new set up for the speakers, maybe this will give you an idea of what I am working with. The room is only about 9 feet wide due to a fireplace, it widens to about... i don't know, 12-13 feet after. it is 26 and a half feet long.

I was referring to the M-890i. I just purchased a model in between the two listed, ive got the M-390is which is basically the 290 in a tower speaker form. They sound excellent for both HT and 2-channel, bass response is awesomely smooth and not boomy at all. Now the 890i is a bi-polar speaker, where as the 390is I have and the 290is listed are not. The bi-polar will give you the huge soundstage you are looking for.
tomMost of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else - -
i was reading a review on those that said they are sensitive to placement and room acoustics.. it also says the "musical scope is limited" ... it said they were good for jazz, bad for rock. I listen to mostly rock and the room I have them in is nothing special, I'm limited on placement too.
oh crap... the ad just expired too -

The 890s will be plenty for rock in a room like that....
Messiah has a good point with the Paradigms.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

You're probably going to have placement issues with anything big enough to fill that space, but some will be more manageable than others.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Hmm, I am probably looking for those 'others' :P
Many people are satisfied with the 25's, even using equal gear...i probably need something that isn't very picky about the room. -

You could always get some Cerwin Vegas and call it a day . You could take a look at Swan if your interested, I hear they're pretty good, and they're reasonably priced. Swan SpeakersHome:

i dont think i want to go self powered.

Look into some paradigm mini monitors, ive got version 3 and use them in my bedroom which is 12x13.5. Ive got them on 25in stands and they rock that room with no need of a sub. You can get them on ebay used for less than $200. Dont let the mini fool you, they are a rather large book shelf speaker. Most of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else -

Yeah, I saw those after I posted.. I have a bit of a fear of internet direct speakers, and they are a little expensive.
I've been looking into paradigm.. it's just hard to find people selling them locally... I would like to avoid the whole shipping thing if possible. -
knoxville certainly lacks people who are selling speakers. I think what I will do is watch the local craigslist and if anything catches my eye, I'll post it here for scrutiny.
For now, I've been messing with my 25's i bi-wired them to the adcom, made no difference. I moved them forward about 3 feet... that made a big difference.
How much, exactly, does the preamp affect the sound? I was looking into getting a preamp anyhow... I was thinking of matching my amp and getting an adcom something or other... for 2 channel listening, would this be an upgrade, downgrade, lateral move? Also, I currently connect my computer through coax.... I would have to get some sort of mini to rca cable if I bought an old adcom pre... would that be bad? -

You'd want a DAC, much better option.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

cokewithvanilla wrote: »So, I would not want your fine gtp-400? I would want a dac?
You'd want a DAC AND the gtp-400.
The GTP-400 will only take analog signals, so you'd have to convert the digital signal from your computer to analog beforehand.
A DAC is simple a Digital Analog Converter.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

You can usually find the Adcom GDA-6000 for a decent price, you could also look into the AMC Dac 8, they're usually pretty cheap.
Might be able to find the Cambridge Audio DacMagic for a decent price.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a preamp that already has a dac in it? Like mine, but without all the video stuff...

Maybe... but it probably won't be as good. You can put an outboard dac and my preamp together for about $300.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Music Fidelity makes some reasonably priced DAC units that sound OK...there are better of course.....but then there is the question of MONEY!

Yes, but it has pre outs and can act as a preamp (it is a tube preamp), and has a built in dac.
Ah yes, JC Penny MCS....they had some good vintage components, some of which were made by Panasonic or Sanyo, and some were quite good, others not so much....I don't know about their speakers though....Home:

I am getting rid of my B&K7270SII, Emotiva DMC-1, and LSi25's ((putting them into storage more than likely) and I want to buy a cheap 2 channel preamp to work with my Adcom GFA-5800.
I wanted to try something different, I've never been satisfied with my polks, and I doubt i'll be satisfied with something cheap, but hey, change is always fun.
Anyone wanna recommend some speakers for a small enviornment that will sound good on my Adcom and cost me little (I plan to buy used)?
I was looking at some Magnepan MMG's... but they might be too big
