How bout don't smoke around your computer whether its PC or apple. While a PC repair man may fix it when apple won't, smoking near a computer can turn its insides into a complete mess. If you're a smoker then having to have your computer fixed and cleaned from time to time.. at your expense.. should be considered a cost of having your computer in a harmful environment. Its not apples fault that the computer isn't working b/c of something the comsumer did.

that being said, I wouldn't put it past the repair guys to see just a little bit of evidence of a smoker and decide they don't want to do the work even if its an easy fix and the issue has nothing to do with 2nd hand smoke damage.

Back when I was fixing PC's , you knew instantly if the pc came from a smokers house....9 out of ten times it was no big deal...a little nasty smell that would fade away in a few minutes.

Then once in a while you would run into one that was seriously disgusting, the smell would never fade away. I had built this trick custom desktop for this guy ...using those clear vinyl covered stainless steel braided IDE cables.

A couple of years later he got a nasty virus and wanted a larger HD anyways....you couldnt even see the stainless braid anymore...it had this thick dark yellow film all over everything inside the case. So although some do get seriously disgusting.....most arent and clear out in a few minutes.

Apple should just have a special room where techs that smoke can repair the pc's ...and on the repair tag/ email form have a checkable box asking if any that use the pc smoke...if so they get routed to the smokers paradise repair room :D

So does anyone actually believe this is happening in any widespread way? I can't comment on the veracity of the story without any statement from Apple, but I'm sure any of you Mac owners and smokers will not have any problem getting your Mac fixed by Apple without any hassle. If this is some kind of corporate policy it's utterly retarded and I doubt it will stand, especially considering how many of their customers are coffee shop dwellers and smokers.

Most likely not. There most likely aren't that many Apple OSX users being people who smoke inside anyways. In that case I'd be more worried about the resale value of the house than Apple warranty. :)

I totally agree with not repairing smoke damaged electronics. One of my first jobs was repairing consumer electronics. Some of the items would come in so nasty looking you didn't want to touch the insides. Get this, even the components were so yellowed you couldn't read the resistor color codes or numbers on parts. Add to this an almost cobweb like stuff built up around everything. This is customer abuse to the electronics. Of course we are talking about .01 percent of the repairs but when its there you can tell. Kinda like roaches in a microwave, you can't subject your workers to it.

Looks more like a cost cutting measure. I wonder how many they'd sell if this was spelled out as a 'feature' of their warranty. Yet another reason not to own one.

Yet another reason to NOT SMOKE.

    Here's what I see happening:

Reality - Smoking has been PROVEN to cause all sorts of illnesses that will kill you. There are more smokers today than ever before.

Theory - Smoking has been proven to harm your Apple PC. Smoking declines US-wide and bankrupts tabacco industry.

Don't need a lecture, we get that constantly. It's too bad SHS doesn't kill the obnoxious anti-smokers, or at minimum, impede their ability to communicate. That's a tax I could get behind.

So the nicotine found on a circuit board is more toxic than other substances used to fabricate it? GMAFB. (lead, mercury, etc.)

Reality - this isn't about the health of the technicians, it's about being able to legally deny warranty repairs, thereby saving them $$.

More reality....You CAN NOT bankrupt Phillip-Morris. Take a look at the companies they own sometime.

Theory - most of the same style junk science that is used to push global warming, is used to 'prove' the effects of SHS. For example, your statement that smoking directly causes 'all sorts of illnesses'. Wrong. It might lower the body's immune capabilities, making one more susceptible, but it causes no illness.

Most likely. They could always increase pay for those that agree to work on "hazardous environment" and provide them safety equipment. :)

Not sure what you're trying to say here...first you say that smokers are the target of everyone's "whining" (my interpretation), but at the end you say that they no longer speak up?
