Tastykake Pancake Krimpets

OK, for those of you who are deprived, Tastykake is a bakery company like Hostess or Little Debbie or Drake's but only a million times better. Except for Drake's, they are quite good as well.

Tastykake has a product that they call Krimpets. They are basically the same idea as Twikies only they come in a variety of flavors. Jelly Krimpets have jelly inside. I think it's strawberry, I don't remember for sure. They have my absolute favorite Butterscotch Krimpets with butterscotch frosting and no filling.

Every so often they make some limited edition Krimpet. Like once I saw a Krimpet with grape jelly inside and a peanut butter frosting and they called them PB&J Krimpets. They were good but a bit too much sugar made them unbearable for more than two Krimpets.

They do Holiday based ones as well.

Well this morning I'm getting coffee and I glanced over at the vending machine and noticed a package that looked odd. Closer inspection shows it's Pancake Krimpets. I was like WTF?

Let me tell you, these things are the work of the devil! I thought they would be disgusting but worth a try. No, they are not. They are the standard sponge cake Krimpets with maple syrup flavored frosting and this "butter cream" filling which might as well be straight butter. Aside from the crumbly cake texture, they taste like pancakes covered in maple syrup, powdered sugar and butter. I'm thinkin' they might be even better nuked in the microwave to make them warm.

Is the buttercream filling like the top of a butterscotch krimpet?

Oh God I love Tastykake. They only recently started showing up in stores around here. When I first became friends with this one girl in college who was from Maryland, she introduced me to them, and even got me a "sampler box" for Christmas one year. As Homer would say, Sweet Merciful Crap.

Probably not, they are more of a Northeast US item. Living in the Philly area, my wife's family has shipped to them to people who have moved away to areas that can't get them. The same people have been know not "stock up" on Tastykakes when in the area too.

No, it's smoother. Kinda like the cream in a Coconut Junior but flavored like butter and without the shredded coconut.

Tastykake makes all kinds of good stuff! They have pies, cookies, cakes and...yeah, tons of stuff.

The best Tastykake of all time is the Chocolate Junior which is essentially pound cake sliced in layers and covered in chocolate frosting with chocolate cream between the layers. Real simple, real easy and it must be dusted with crack 'cause I can't figure out why it's so damn good.

They also make pies. Individual pies that look like a hot pocket but are flat out incredible. They have so many different pies that my head spins just thinking about it. The best one in most peoples opinion is the Lemon pie which is like a lemon meringue pie without the meringue. My favorites are the Tasty Klair pie which is essentially an eclair. They have the best pie ever which is their Pumpkin but it's only available seasonally. Then there is the Peach pie which is my favorite fruit pie.

But then there are the old standards like the Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes or the Chocolate Cupkakes, frosted or filled. There are the Kremies which are chocolate sponge cake with a layer of cream in the middle. Can't forget the Krimpets, butterscotch or jelly. And one of my favorites, the Koffee Kakes. But I honestly like Drake's coffee cake better.

But yeah, the only issue with Tastykakes is that they go stale. They don't last for months like Hostess stuff does so if you get them, you gotta eat them. But the more fresh they are, the better they are.

And I was in Hawaii one time for work and a local bar there had bartenders from NJ there. We asked them what they missed most about the area. One guy said cheesesteaks and hoagies, another said Wawa. The third said "Tastykakes. These people think Hostess is good! They just don't know." So the next day I called a friend working on co-op at Tastykake and had him overnight one of each Tastykake Kare Packages to the bar. The next morning they showed up and the dudes from NJ were like OMG! One bartender who grew up in California and swore by Hostess tried Butterscotch Krimpets for the first time in his life. The bartenders told me he stole all the Butterscotch Krimpets and wants to know how he can get more.

Nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake!

    Jstas,

I grew up in the area, went to college in Philly and now work in Philly. I have mastered the fine art of the $5 Wawa meal. Wawa, being a fine establishment of the convenience variety is also a purveyor of Tastykakes and a part of the $5 Wawa meal is usually a Tastykake for dessert. Consequently I am well versed in the myriad of offerings from the baker of reference.

And again, for those that don't know, up until gas prices made EVERYTHING more expensive, one could walk in to a Wawa Market with 5 bucks and walk out with a meal including a sammich, a beverage, a bag of chips and dessert. It would be $5 or less, maybe a tad more depending on what the local tax laws were regarding prepared food.

If you don't believe me, add this up:
Wawa Shorti Ham and Cheese: $2.50
Bag of Herr's Potato chips: $.65
Wawa Iced Tea 12 oz.: $.95
    Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets: $.55
    Tax: $.33

    Grand total: $4.98

Now prices are up about 15% from that. You can still do it for just over $6 but kinda loses the panache.

And again, for the deprived, Wawa is a store much like 7-Eleven or maybe a Sheets or Circle K or what have you only a thousand times better than all of them combined. Go ahead and laugh at the name. The stores are named after the town they started in, Wawa, Pennsylvania. It's an Ojibwe word for Canadian Geese. Ojibwe was a Native American tribe from the area. Want something else to laugh at? The Chairman of The Board Of Directors for Wawa, Inc. is Richard D. Wood. They call him "Dick". So Dick D. Wood is the Chairman of The Board Of Directors for Wawa, Inc.

Your a hell of a salesman.

One more thing. When you spend that $5.00 bill do you leave the two pennies in the little cup for other customers to use as needed?

I would, but i'm on his Bozo List, and i think i was able to interpret all the underlying messages in his posts and figure out that he likes them. But i'm not positive. Guess like in audio, i'll have to try it and figure it out for myself. ;)

Luckily i'm not the only person that'll be eating these... the girlfriend will eat these like they're going out of style, and i figure $40 isn't TOO bad for the sheer amount that will come. Most of the other sampler things were that much anyways.

    Now i'm excited!

I have had both, but I'll stick with Little Debbie. The Oatmeal Cream Pies, Fudge Rounds, Carmel Cookie Bars and Star Crunch are pretty awesome.

This is more about nostalgia and what you grew up on more so than great bakery. :)

That said, I want to try these Pancake treats.
