Blu Ray audio hookup

So I need to know what connections to use for the best audio. Considering my receiver does not have hdmi I will need to use either fiber optic, coaxial, or muli input. Which one should I use for my blu ray player? I already have a nice fiber optic cable and a coaxial but not enough cable for multi in. I am running a 5.1 right now but will be going to 7.1 in a about a month.

Use the optical cable. You sound definately consider getting a receiver with hdmi inputs. You'll be very pleased with the new HD formats.

Not something I plan to do for a long time. Just got an elite receiver that will suit me fine for now. Probably in 5 or 6 years that will happen.

Just notice than none of them have the multi out, but I would still like to know which would be the best out of the 3.

I am asking how to connect a BR player for audio not what to buy.

Depending on the BRP you choose will better determine how you hook it up, that's why he asks. You might not even have to use optical/coaxial, nor have to upgrade your receiver to something that uses HDMI because you can possibly score a BRP for cheap that has multi-channel analog outputs with internal decoding for new formats.

As far as I know, I don't think you can get the new formats over optical/coaxial....only hdmi or multi-channel analog (if the player self-decodes) seeing as how you've got an older AVR.

Well I did post which ones I am looking at. The Pioneer BDP-51FD would be my final buy probably.

Since your receiver had multi channel in for all 7 channels, you should look for a bluray player that has multi channel out. If it does all of the decoding you would not need a receiver that decodes the new HD audio codecs because the player will be doing that for you. Someone correct me if this it wrong.

    BTW your Infinity's are 2000.6's not 2000.5's

Well, you didn't list the Pioneer...Lee did :)

That would be my choice over the rest you've mentioned, you're killing 2 birds with 1 stone because they make exceptional CDP's as well. Grab that and go multi-channel analog and you're set!

I've seen that Pio go for about as much as you'd pay for the Sony on ebay. Just look around!

Exactly. You can NOT take advantage of the Hi-Def codecs (True-HD and DTS-MA) without an HDMI connection OR a player that decodes those codecs and has multi-ch analog outputs. Period. The coaxial or optical connections do not support those codecs.

If you choose not to worry about the Hi-Def codecs, you can use the coax or optical, either one will provide you with the DTS core or DD tracks on every BluRay disc provided for backward compatibility.

Honestly, you are not missing much that you couldn't wait for. Look for a 51 on ebay or elsewhere. It's money well spent. The players you are considering have almost no resale value.

Damn, Boscovs just had the LG bd270 this past weekend for $100. I wish I knew you were looking, that would have fit the bill. Keep an eye out if they run it on sale again.

Never mind, it doesn't have 7.1 analog outs anyways.
