Childproof Monitor 40 Speaker Stands?

I'm upgrading my setup to the Monitor lineup with Monitor 60 fronts, CS2 center, and I ordered 4 Monitor 30s for surrounds. I really wanted the 40s, but couldn't think up a good way to elevate them without my 2 year old being able to knock them over. Any ideas or suggestions?

Can't come up with a cheap solution for you, but I did see these at partsexpress.com:
    http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=240-808&scqty=2

The top plate is wide enough that it will contain the entire base of the Monitor 40's. Plate is 8" x 14" and the base of the 40's are 7" x 12". You could either hard mount the 40's to the top plate with some screws or hardware running them up through the base plate and into the bottom of the 40's. Alternatively, there is enough room on the baseplate to affix some type of hold down strap that would run up over the top of the 40's to hold them down to the plate.

This base has two tubes that you can fill with sand or shot (or depleted uranium) basically the densest thing you can find to add weight. Hopefully that would weigh them down enough to prevent your 2 yo from knocking them over.

So, as I said, those stands aren't particularly cheap but maybe they'll give you an idea of something to look for.

Otherwise....shock collar??? :) Just kidding! Good luck!

Wow, that's a tough question! But how about stacking 4 or 5 8x8x16 SOLID cider blocks on their long sides(for 1 stand) and then encasing them in wood or cloth.?

That might work but man, 2 yr olds will generally find fault with ANYTHING in their paths..
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Sorry, I have to have fun with this too...but maybe you could keep some broccoli on top of each speaker as a deterrent? :) Or whatever food your 2 yo has an aversion to!

Thanks for the suggestions. Aside from the broccoli, they seem more expensive than a screw in the wall and living with the Monitor 30s. I've considered something like the cinder block idea, but can't figure out a good way to keep the speaker on the top so he can't push a chair over, then topple the speaker off the stand. I don't really like the idea of **** into the bottom of the speaker.

Hey, you've already go the 30's. I'm sure they'll sound great and you're saving money and will have a safer home. Two big pluses with a 2 yo around! Have fun with your new setup and the little one. I'm sure he will get a kick out of watching and listening to his favorite movies too!

Sell the kid, at the very least you could swap someone a couple pairs of monitor 40s for him, but only if the kid is in MINT (as new) condition

I like the meaty stands with straps over the top. It wouldn't look good, but would hold well and wouldn't cause damage. Just make sure the clasps were soldered with silver solder...

Two year olds are incredibly well suited to finding any plan's weakness. Wall mount those puppies.

The best stand for the 40's is to buy a pair of 50's instead.

    +1

That doesn't solve the problem with the 2 year old though. :o

Is mounting them on the wall out of the question? I have 4 speakers mounted (2 on the wall, 2 on the ceiling) and that keeps them out of harms way. I used the paramount by peerless wall/ceiling satellite speaker mounts. They work like a charm and keep them away from my troupe (5 kids)

That's what I'm doing with the Monitor 30s I ordered, but how would you do that with the 40s? They're so big and heavy, and don't have a keyhole to mount them with. My brother has the 40s, and he tried using these Monoprice mounts, and the 40s were too big and heavy for them. All he ended up with was mounts that didn't work, and holes in the back of is 40s.

My sons used to like try to tip my RTA11TL's over. I ended up strapping them to the floor (the speakers that is, not the kid). I attached metal straps to where the feet screw in and screwed the other ends into the floor. It isn't the best idea acoustically but my kids didn't get smashed.
