does anyone has any opinions on yamaha subwoofers? I can get a YST RSW300 for a decent price here in Mexico, but i have no idea if it is any good for a modest HT setup

    What's a subwoffer?

    Spec's on this are:

    Multi-Range Driver 10" Cone
    Magnetic Shielding •
    High Cut Filter 40 - 140 Hz
Phase Control (Normal or Reverse) •
    Auto Standby •
    BASS (Bass Action Selector system)
    Dynamic Power 270W
    Frequency Response 20 - 160 Hz

Seems just okay to me but I like Sunfire. It gets a pass from me for going to 20 Hz but if you can demo it before you buy that would be the best thing to do.
Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t

I haven't heard much about the yamaha subs. I know the smaller ones tend to fall on their face pretty easily, but I haven't heard their 10" subs yet. I'm with thuffman, see if you can find a retailer that carries them and go have a listen:)

    Many thanks for your suggestions.

i was able to demo the yamaha, but at the end I decided to get a velodyne DLS 4000R. Finally my HT is taking shape, so I´m watching some bluray movies now!

I have been to a few audio places and heard a few Yamaha subs. Was not really that impressed. I would look at klipsch or polk subs.

Velodyne make very good subs. If I had the choice between the two you are talking about I would go with Velodyne.
