    How temporary is temporary?

I second the insignia if you just want to get into the game quick and cheap.

Personally, out of those three, the Sony is my pick. I've heard too many negative things about the Samsung and don't trust a company like Insignia can keep up with updates that some of the bigger companies can do, especially if you plan on connecting it to the Internet and using BD-Live (which is a joke, but not relevant to this thread ;) )

Screw black friday and get this instead.

Grabbed one of these a few months ago and it's great in the bedroom. Streaming netflix to watch all those seasons of southpark and everything else is great.

If you want an excellent BluRay player at a low price, look at Panasonic.

I've owned a Panasonic BD player and thought it was fast and issue free.

I'm in the Oppo camp as well. But it's a little out of the OP's reach. The Panny or the LG are both pretty good entry-level purchases. There is a JVC that is also supposed to be pretty good but I think it's near $200.

As long as you are just looking to "get in" to BluRay, the Insignia will actually be fine. Not a great SD DVD player though. Maybe get that and save up for a better upscaler/BD player.

At the bottom end, none of those machines is going to have a good scaler/deinterlacer chip and all will be about the same for BluRay.

I am also looking at the blueray players that are available. i would love to get the oppo but there is no way i can afford it. I am looking to get a cheap player at this time. I have a few questions about the checp players that are being recommended in this thread.

    1. are these also SACD players?
    2. As mentioned above how do these compare to he PS3?
    3. does the upconverting of regular DVD generally suck?

The main reason i hvae not gotten into BR sooner is my tv is 720p and do not think that i would see a huge increase in picture quality. The HD audio is intriguing me now that i have a better HT than ever before.

    thanks

Go for the Oppo BDP-83, you will notice the PQ on your 720P also.

The Oppo BDP-83 is the least expensive "universal" player on the market that will play BD, DVD, CD and SACD. The Denon 4010 is the next player that will support those formats, but it has a list price of $1999.

I'd save the extra coin now and grab a Pioneer BDP-51FD off of amazon refurb. It's not that much more, and will be easily twice the player in every way.

HMMMMM very interesting. I just might have to do that. It is not an elite bust still nice and will look good with the receiver.

Now I noticed it has 2 channel output I would hook them up for when using it for music and the fiber optic or multi in for surround?

However the newer models no longer support SACD. The earlier gen 60gig was the only one that did Super Audio.

Which is one of those "things that make you go hmmm". Sony format. Sony product capable of everything else. WTF?

They are said to be fair upscalers. I have no direct experience as I am not a console gamer. If I was, I might have done a PS3 instead of an Oppo BDP. The worst thing about them as far as I can tell, is the fan noise. If you are bitstreaming audio to a receiver anyway (ie: no analog) there is a compelling argument for using a PS3 as source. The lack of SACD is a deal killer for me though these days.

I am not wanting to drop 200 or 300 dollars for a ps3. I have no real use for it other than movies. I might once in a great while play guitar hero or dj hero but that would be it. I would rather get something I will actually use.

A $300 ps3 will blow away any other blu Ray player in its price range. Too many people are concerned about its double duty use but its well under priced for the performance you get..

I own the Pioneer bd51fd and elite 05 player and the load times and PQ on the ps3 is better than both.

Yes but I am not worried about just that. I am worried about playing music cd's and if it will blend in with the other equipment. I would rather get the pioneer that was mentioned than the PS3. Now saying that if for some crazy reason the original PS3 drops the price again by the end of the year I might consider it.

Maybe the Sony BDP N460, a good player and does the streaming thing. It streams Netflix, Amazon, and about 23 others including Youtube. It's $250, but I'm sure you can find it for less by now. It's been out a little over a month now. No wireless if that matters.

Not worried about netflix and all the reason being is where I live I only get satellite internet and if you exceed your bandwidth limit in 5 minutes it will time out dropping the speed to 8 kbps for 12 hours. So no streaming things over the internet or downloading things interest me.

so the PQ on your 720p set is dramatically better? interesting... I had read that it would not be that big of a jump.

One other thing i am looking for is a player that loads quickly. I currently have a HD-DVD played i picked up for $40 to upconvert my dvd's but it takes forever to power on and load a movie. Looks like i may be getting a BR player sooner than i thought. :)

So if I'm choosing between a Slim PS3 120GB and the Sony BPD-S560 (since those are the choices with the deal on Sony Style) is the general consensus that the PS3 will play BD and CD content just as well and more?
