I have a paradigm 10" passive dual voice coil sub that has some damage to the enclosure, and would like to get the specs for the driver. The driver looks like it might be some thing half way decent. I e-mailed Paradigm to see if I could get the specs from them seeing as it is a legacy product, what a joke. Here was the reply I got:

Hi Ted

I am sorry to hear that the cabinet was damaged but the driver is a proprietary design and Paradigm does not provide that type of information.

Sincerely,

I mean come on what am I going to do take the specs and start mass producing their drivers using my jig saw and drill and using cardboard and a hot glue gun. I could totally understand if this was a current product, but come on they don't even make them any more.

any ways back to the point, any one know how to get specks using a V.O.M. and a signal generator?

Thanks Face. It will be a while before I get one, I'm flat broke right now, and most likely will be for a while. I've seen it quite a few times, didn't even have to click on the links to know what it is. I know there is a way to do it with a sine sweep, a meter,a resister, and an amp. I had the details on how to do it, and how to figure the correction table for the amp you are using for the testing but my computer died and the info is on that hard drive, which is a Sata2 drive, that computer, and my other computer with a sata connectors are both dead, and this one is on it's way out.

    Thanks again,
    Ted

I've heard of that method being used, but am not familiar with it. Regardless, it sounds like you have other issues to sort out first.

    Do they sell replacements?

Build another cab with the same dimensions.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben

yeah yeah, I know. But it's a band ****, yes I know I forgot the P:D I like a little more than 3 notes in my bass. I was hoping to get the specs so I could mock it up in WINISD pro first and see what kind of low end I could get from it. Wanted to really see what it would do with a -3db extended bass shelf

mhardy6647 thank you. Searching from my house really sucks. I wish I had dial up, it would be a lot faster than what we have now(boost mobile).

heh... I was gonna make fun of you for not googling, but I was feeling diplomatic last night ;-)

    Hi Ted,

More than likely you can measure the T/S parameters using your computer. It's the same principle that mhardy outlined above, using your computer for the audio freq. oscillator. Even better if you have a duplex sound card (I don't know of any that aren't) and can have the computer plot the impedance measurements for you. It really requires minimal parts (appropriate cables and a reasonably high precision resistor- you don't have to build a "real" test jig) and you can use the free program Speaker Workshop. Sounds like you might have to find a faster connection to download it from...

It's not real intuitive, but I've used it enough I can probably help get you started.

Yeah, that method will get you most of the specs. Don't bother compensating the voltage measurements as we're talking a correction of under 5%. One option is to take the impedances you find and increase all of them by 1-2%.

You'll still need to add weight to the cone of enclose it in a box(sealed is easier) to test for Vas. Be careful when figuring out the 'surface area' of the speaker. It's not exactly the cone size, nor is it the cone and surround, but somewhere in the middle.

The winISD generator is accurate but cuts off at 20 Hz.

Guess I'll have to put my sound card in this box as the main one is dead, and this box is just using usb speakers. Also have to find the software to do a loop back test to make a correction chart for the sound card.

So are you saying it cuts off at 20hz, or that it is inaccurate? I have used it for quite a while, and can set the plot to show all the way down to 0, I have it set right now to show between 10 and 250hz, with some of the drivers I have been plugging in showing -3db points between 14-18hz.
