Hello again,

I just aquired an older pair of RS speakers that have surprisingly good sound. The thing is, I can't find any additional info other than what's written on the back. And I have some confusion on some of the features.

First off, identification... On the back, they say "nova-6" and they are CAT 40-4019. I've google-d, ebay-ed and searched on some sites I have bookmarked. I even tried the RS site, but it was no help at all. The only spec I have on them is that they are 30w RMS and 8 ohm, according to a sticker on the back.

They have an 8" woofer with an inverted foam surround, and a 2" paper tweeter with an inverted cloth surround. There is a switch on the back that has 3 levels for the tweeter output (real classy). There's one thing I just can't get... there's a single RCA plug inbetween the speaker terminals on each speaker... could this be some kind of interconnecting cable for the speakers? I'm very confused.

So basically, I'm looking for any available specs. Frequency response... anything. Even just a manufacture date.

I'm having some probs getting the pics I took to go up to my brother's server, but hopefully I'll get 'em up for tomorrow. Thanks a lot,

I'm not sure what the specs(frequency response) is but the RCA input is just another way of hooking the speaker up. Back in the 70's to early 80's some manufactures use to have an RCA phono plug instead of screw terminals and some as you have had both. Usually the manufacturer included a plastic dummy plug to seal the RCA phono jack input while using the screw terminals. Alot of Radio Shack speakers had this type of setup. Also most of the so called "compact stereos" of the era had RCA phono jacks as the primary hook up on their speakers. In fact if you go to the shack I bet you can still find 22-24 gauge speaker wire that has spade connections on one end and a RCA jack on the other.

    *smacks head with hand*

I knew that about the RCA jacks. I have an old Realistic record player/amp that has the RCA outputs on it for speakers. I just wasn't thinking.

I'm still looking for more specs, though.

    Thanks,

Can you snap a pic bro? I think I have a couple similar models. Is it a sealed box? I think it may be the later rendition of the MC1000, which I do have the specs for.

    Cheers,

I have a few pics of them, but I can't upload.... lemme try and get something up on the school's website right now.

It is a sealed enclosure. I got one of the tweeters out and it has a plastic enclosure behind it filled with polyfill to seperate it from the rest of the enclosure. I couldn't get any info off the back of the tweeter, 'cept a model number and "japan". I tried to get one of the woofers out, but both of 'em have _one_ screw I can't get freed up.

Whoever had these things must not've used 'em much.... the surrounds on the woofers are in very surprising shape for old foam surrounds. They have no hint of rot at all.

I'll get right back on those pics... gimme a sec

    okay.... go to www.ccsd.cc/users/nadams/speaks.htm

There's 4 pics there that may help in identification. Also, these have a fake woodgrain on them, and also the grills are plastic woodgrain lattice, which I immediately removed because they have a sheet of inhibiting plywood on the back with circles cut out for the 2 speakers. They don't look all that bad without it on, so I think they're going to stay naked for now.

I love it! I own a few pair of RS speakers, and someday I'll even build cabinets for them.

Ahhh, the Novas! I think my sister has a pair of 6's. I'll ask her if that's the model and if she has any paperwork still. I doubt it, but it's worth a shot. I'll keep my eyes peeled, but can't promise anything.

They look similar, but definately not the same.

Can't help bud, mine are 90db., 55-20K -3db, 30w cont. I would imagine they aren't too far from that.

    Cheers,

Sent an email to RS customer service last night... surprisingly they replied today.... here's what I got-

    "Hello,

    Thank you for your email.

Due to the age of the speakers, discontinued in 1978,
manuals and parts have been discontinued. Additional
    information is no longer available.

    Cookie
    Radio Shack Product Support"

If that's all RS has.... I doubt more is going to be found...
