Monitor 4s: to be... or not to be...

Hey guys. Picked up a set of Monitor 4s with the SL2500 tweeters. They were an absolute steal, so I'm only "slightly" bummed due to the fact that when I got home and actually hooked them up, one of the SL2500s was shotsky... no sound, what so ever. Everything else is working great.

I already swapped them out; It's definitely the tweeter. I'd like to be able to use them, but I'm thinking of just parting them up and using the MW6502s as backups.

Any tips as to how to "fix" the tweeter problem will be greatly appreciated.

The DIY guys will be around soon. As for me, I'd just look for a couple of RDO194 (I'd check to see if that is the replacement for the SL2500...I know it is for my SL2000s).

It'll give you a bump in sound quality though it might cost you as much as you paid for the 4's to begin with..so this may not be what you want to hear...

I'm sure there are other options.

I thought about that. Getting RDOs would be uh.... quintupling my investment.

If they were mine, i'd part them out. I personally really disliked how they sounded.

Thanks for the opinion. Right now the staging is way off (obviously, as there's only ONE tweeter operational. I'm sure they'll sound much better with BOTH operational, but the question is enough better to justify the escalation of commitment. I think I'll just keep an eye out for a replacement set of SL2500s.

BTW, I was reading the the 198 is the replacement for both the SL2500 AND the SL3000.

Random question, can I swap out the SL2500s for SL3000s if I find a really good deal on a pair of them?

    John,

When I picked up my RTA-11TLs I put my 198s into them, and put my SL3000s into my 5Jr+, which had been using the 198s. I don't know if it's officially sanctioned replacement, but to my ears the SL3000 in the 5Jr+ is OK. Definitely better than they sounded with the original SL2500.

    Actually,

I'm kinda fond of monitor 4's they were my first pair of polks and although they are relegated to a closet after my move, I look forward to hooking them back up. In college, I would set them on top of my KG4's and ask people to tell me if the KG4's were playing. Most often they were not and people would guess that they were. In a room that size and with as many hard surfaces as I had, the bass response was very good. But what ALWAYS blew me away was how well they imaged. They could throw a soundstage like nobody's business. On certain recordings I did have to dial back the treble but I had to do that with the Klipsch as well. Oh well to each his own I guess, but I hate to see you part out a pair of speakers that could probably serve you well in a backup system for around $120.

They were my first pair of Polk speakers also. I used monitor 4's for surround speakers in my old HT for years and they were great. If you can find a cheap replacement tweeter I would fix them. I think they are worth it.
