So how would this radiator work in the SDA-2's?

Peerless 831481 10" XLS 400g Passive Radiator (830481)

I'm just considering options for replacements, or if I have any options. Any help would be appreciated!

You need the stock ones. BTW the stock ones are 12"ers.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

The 120's are 12 inches? There is no way another radiator can be used? Since they are no longer made, it gets a little scary.

My cats did a number on the front of the radiators several years ago, and as the rubber around the midwoofers is beginning to crack and split., I am looking to replace all the drivers since I don't want to replace the speakers.

Might be cheaper just to look for another pair.

Wouldn't there be the same issues with another pair since age is the problem? I bought these in '86. Money is an issue for the time being. I can get new drivers a couple at a time from Polk. I was hoping the radiators could be replaced with an alternative.

The rubber surrounds deteriorating on these is not typical.... should be pretty easy to find a pair that doesn't have these issues.

My cats don't scratch the drivers.... They just love to stick their paws in the ports. It's pretty funny.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

I have a pair of passive that I received to do a project. I no longer need them. They won't be free, but I am not going to rake you over the coals either.

What exactly is wrong with the P.radiators, are the surrounds cracking on those also? If your surrounds are cracking it's probably because someone applied some sort of preservative or cleaner that attacked the rubber,or.....it's possible that it's a coating that was applied that is now cracking on the surface and the rubber underneath is still OK. PRs show up on ebay every so often as well as the 6.5" drivers. Some pics would help to show what's what.:)

The rubber surrounds on the PR's don't seem to be cracking or splitting as of yet. I was just looking into getting replacement drivers without the scratched up fronts.

Some kid thought he would help me out once and applied some sort of cleaner to the drivers. the 6.5 drivers seem to be the most affected, since they are cracking so badly. I'm not sure what he used, but they are breaking up.
    The mids are 6501's.

Generally the rubber is extremely long lasting. I've had several pair of vintage Polks and had zero issues with rubber cracking, etc.

The passive radiators are a problem because I am not aware of an aftermarket unit that has the *exact* specs of the original. I'd call Polk customer service and ask them what they would recommend as a replacement. I'm sure there is a company out there that makes something close enough it might work.

    Or watch ebay.

Thanks for your answers! I was asking about the peerless because I was wondering if the smaller mids would be able to push them. I was looking to improve on them.

Wow! Thanks for the link. I would have to get 6503's if I got brand new. I am not sure what the difference is. I would like improved drivers to replace the old ones, but not all the mids are cracking, as of yet.

Stick with the original drivers from Polk. If you want to improve them Polk makes a replacement tweeter for the sl1000/sl2000 which is a much better sounding tweeter. And upgrading the worn capacitors and resistors in the x-overs turns these into new speakers in every way.

That's how you improve them, not by buying off the shelf drivers from another manufacturer.

    Good luck

Unless you've got a fistfull of engineering degrees.....I'm kind'a doubtful that you'll be able to effect much of an improvement over the way Mr.Polk designed them with the exception of minor "tweeks" and installing upgraded tweeters. Which SDA2 models do you have ? 2 or 3 6.5" drivers per cabinet?

Yes, I have been reading the forums and am very interested in doing the crossovers. I understand about using the wrong drivers. I guess I was just hoping to find alternatives that could work. Wishful thinking on my part. Thanks, you people are great!

I've got the two tweeters, though I'm only using one of them on each speaker (cracks in the plastic) 3 mids per cabinet.

With 6501s I bet my life on original SDA-2s.

Did you get your passive problem "solved" yet?
