I went down stairs an I hear water running. The thing was pissing pretty hard. The thing was way over due to be replaced, but no income makes this really suck!
I am looking at this model.

    That sux.
If it's any consolation, you may qualify for a tax rebate for this change-out.
My co. doesn't do residential, so I don't know the particulars of the $1,500 credit.

30 gallon seems kinda low.I use a 50 gallon, can't stand running out of hot water while in the shower. Between the dishwasher, washing machine, and a daughter,it can get eaten up quick if everything is going on at the same time. Check local listenings for scratch and dent sales, you may be able to pick one up cheaper.

Thanks Tony. I will keep that in mind. 30gal is fine for me, and I don't shower at the same time as the girls. Also I don't use the dish washer much. I do them by hand. BTW if it is only 30gal it will keep the girls from taking long showers:)

    Sorry to hear that.:(
That's a problem that sneaks up on alot of people. Most only start to see a little water and then get it swapped out.

I think 10 yrs is supposed to be their life exp. but many last ALOT longer..

I believe spending a little more if at all possible and get a larger capacity one too. 40 gal. at least unless your not home much.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

It is pretty much just me, and the girls. They shower together for now(6 and 4).Conserving utilities is a huge priority for me. My old efficiency had a point of use shower that was only about 4 gallons. That was a get in get out no messing about shower!

Check the Home Depot Clearance Center in Austell. I purchased a pair of front load washer and dryers at 1/2 price from there. Scratch and dent was hidden BEHIND the units. I don't remember if they had water heaters but they did have lots of appliances.

    Ben,
A 30gal 30,000btu water heater is too small for most homes. Your better off getting at LEAST a 40gal 40,000btu heater and keep the water temperature lower. The cost of the unit is only slightly higher but you'll need the larger capacity when your little angels get older.
In my area (NJ) I use, Bradford White, Rheem, and AO Smith, but prefer and recommend the Bradford White.

The BTU thing isn't like up north. In CT the water was real cold. Down here the cold water doesn't get that cold;)

    Hey Ben:

I've had a couple of really bad experiences with Whirlpool water heaters from lowes. Hard to get replacement parts. Just FYI. You might look into a Bradford White from your local plumbing supply. Usually 40 gal tanks are the same price or cheaper than 30gal. Good luck.

I'd go lowest price, whatever it is if you are in a bind. Even the crappyest thing out there will last for many years.

You might be changing out that Whirlpool sooner than the rated amount of years. If you don't have a supply shop nearby, Home Depot has a GE 40/gal 36Kbtu, tall for 378$, and the Short was only 20$ more. They are made by Rheem, which is above par, but haven't confirmed this. Whirlpool is total sketch.

30 is too small....I'd suggest 50-60. Unless it's basically just you for at the moment...but you know your water usage habits better than I do.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

We got a 40 gallon whirlpool electric some years ago when ours bailed. House is total electric. I'm thinking we paid half what they're quoting you, so check that out between NG and electric. An electrician like you, you can run romex from a 240 breaker in your panel ( if it supports another 50 or 60 amps) to the HW closet, all piece of cake stuff.
Also, price-match online suppliers, Lowes vs. Home Depot- go for the jugular, homes.
40 gallons is all we ever needed with 4 kids growing up. They're all grown up and out.

Here's a thing about that particular model- the head unit crapped out about 2 years in. We checked around on warranty, called the right people in Tennessee, they next-day shipped a replacement and return bill for the defective one. Simple swap. That was like 5 years ago, no problems since.

My friend Jerry's brother is a plumber, and he says if I am upgrading from a 1988 gas heater to a tank less energy star I can get a $1000 rebate? Anyone hear of this? Even without the rebate it would pay off in a few year and save some room in the laundry room. I have been looking at the Rheem's from Lowes.
    Thanks guys you are awesome.

There is no expansion tank required for this model?

Ben, on demand water heaters are very good, but they have their limitations, and there are a few things you have to know before getting one so you don't run into problems.

    1. these are on demand flow based units. If you use only one fixture at a time you'll have no problem. It starts to get tricky when multiple fixtures are used simultaneously, as the hot water pressure will begin to drop.

    2. These units use a large amount of gas, so you have to make sure the gas line is sized properly. A 1/2" line will not carry enough gas for this WH.

    3. These are direct vent units that use a concentric venting system (where the exhaust is the center pipe and fresh air comes in through the outer pipe.) You have to add these materials to the cost of the heater. Also this doesn't use a chimney and gets vented directly to the outside , so placement and termination issues must be addressed before you buy.

    4. These type of units are prone to scaling, so you need to know what the hardness of your water is. From my experience after hundreds of installations is if you have less than 10 grains/gallon hardness you should be fine, if your over 10 than you should install a water softener.

IF you need help with sizing, feel free to call me.
