Help with noise-canceling headphones!

Being the tech-savvy person in the family, my mother has asked that I help her find the best price on what my Dad wants for Christmas. He's asking for the BOSE QuietComfort 3 headphones!
I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on other options in this range? My Dad, a once proclaimed audiophile, has slipped through the cracks and already has a Bose 1-2-3 system. Please help me show him the light! If I can justify a different pair to both my mom and him, I may be able to save him.
Now, for all I know, the QuietComfort headphones are good muffs. But I'm sure there are better options in the pricerange. Sennheiser? Grado? I presume the budget is around $300, and has to be NEW.
Thanks.

I think all the grado headphones are open backed, so they will not be noise-canceling.
