SDA 2B Problems

I have a pair of SDA 2B's and the "effects" channel in the right speaker isn't working. The interconnect cable seems ok becuase the left speaker works fine when it 's connected.
Anybody have any ideas what the problem could be and whether parts are still available if I need them?
Thanks

Could be the driver is blown. Is it frozen? Give it a gentle push to see if it moves or if the voice coil is rubbing against the magnet.SDA-2BTL with custom IC

You could swap the questionable driver to the other speaker to see if the problem follows it.Or,, remove it and test it to see if it is working.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

And check to see if its connected.Welcome to club polkSDA-2BTL with custom IC

Ok - I made sure it wasn't the wiring or an amplifier problem by switching the offending speaker wiring with the other one. I also gave it the suggested gentle push (es). Still no output from the effects speaker.
Assuming this means a blown driver or broken crossover, are parts still available anywhere, or is this the end of a happy 21 year relationship? -
did you actually swap the driver with the good one?JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Hi Fahzz, and Welcome to Club Polk!
When you gave a gentle inward push to the 6.5" drivers on the right speaker, did they move in and out smoothly and with no scratchy noise?
If you have some time for testing, there is a good Adobe Acrobat pdf file in the post at http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85837VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

George- I didn't swap the driver (I know my limitations)
Inspiredsports - Push went smoothly, no scratchy noises- I'll try at least the non techie tests in the article.
Thanks! -
actuall it's pretty easy,, 4 screws,, two wires,,and boom,, you're out,, look at it this way,, it's inevetable,, you're gonna have to remove it if you have to replace it right? So,, just swap them,if the problem follows--bad driver.Good luck,,let us know what you find out.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

But, be sure to find a Phillips head screwdriver that properly fits the screws, and don't over-tighten when putting them back in. And take your time, don't rush and you will end up enjoying one of the best sounding pairs of SDA's made.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

Be sure to check the inductor leads.I had the same problem you have and it turned out the leads on one of the inductors were broken off.
Do you have a multi meter and soldering iron?SDA-2BTL with custom IC

Had exactly the same problem with my 2B's. I had the polarity reversed on one of the speakers .
Been using them for 20 years or so (I'm the original owner) and made a silly mistake. Make sure the black terminals on the speakers go to the black terminals on the amp, same with red.

You might want to do a continuity test on the IC cable, if that checks out, then you could try "wiggling" the cable ends at LOW volume to see if that changes anything. Also, make sure that the "nuts" for the binding posts are on the correct posts. (they can unscrew all the way off of posts, and sometimes get re-installed **** backwards) Don't give up on them, they can be fixed, one way or another!!
-
So reversed polarity on the offending unit could be the culprit? I will try to rule this out before I start poking around inside the thing. Thanks for everybody's interest and advice. I'll report back.
-
Maybe that gentle pushing did the trick after all. I didn't do anything else to fix it. But then when I turned the system on today, Bebel Gilberto was right where she was supposed to be i.e. singing in the fireplace, with all the other musicians spread around the living room!
Any ideas what caused this transient problem, in case it happens again?
