No, I'm not talking C&C Music Factory here.

I went into Fedex to ship out a box. While I was in there, a woman came in with a complaint. She asked the Fedex rep why the delivery guy allowed her 13yr old to sign for a package that contained narcotic drugs (for her husbands illness).

Now, on the surface you might think "Hmmm, sound like a legitmate complaint" but wait a minute....

How does Fedex know that there is a narcotic drug in box? Have you ever considered raising your children with discipline, rules, and structure so they do the right thing? And the biggest one: Will your kid not have access to this narcotic drug as soon as its placed in your medicine cabinet?

I just don't get this generation of parents. I recently saw a commercial for a "Drug Safe" for your home...a DRUG SAFE. The commercial goes on to say that (in so many words) you would be irresponsible for not owning such a device.

Why don't we just chain our children to their bed, and be done with it? Instead of teaching them how to make responsible decisions, know right from wrong, and the impacts of drugs on their bodies...oh, ****, that's right; that would require effort.

Never mind..

You see the issue here is that the parents need to take responsibility for their children. We now live in a time were nothing is your fault.

guilty as charged. though i'm not THAT bad as the woman you described.

my friends and i have this discussion all the time. i used to run around in the desert 'till 2 AM and never got hurt or in trouble. now i hardly let the kids go to the park alone in our NICE neighborhood due to paranoia. i watch stupid **** kids racing around the streets in our neighborhood (i did some myself as a younger guy) and i worry my kids will get tagged regardless as they carefully look both ways as they ride their bikes.

i think what may be plagueing myself is all the **** you see on the news. alot of the same stuff has been going on forever and ever. but it's really been brought into the limelight by the media. mass paranoia/hysteria will only ensue.

i have to learn to let go some so that my kids can learn a little bit of "street smarts" on their own as i did when i was a kid. my issue is not giving them enough freedom. but i do not shield them from idiotic issues such as what you just described. like guns. i don't spend all my time hiding them from the boys. i take them out shooting. get them familiar with them. they know not to touch a gun that's been left out in the open, though they play video games where you're supposed to kill everyone on the screen. and if by chance they are at a friend's house or elsewhere with others kids their age who don't respect guns, then my kids will hopefully step up and do their best to not allow any ignorant friends make a mess of things.

it's all in the parents to a point. i suspect many are as worried as myself about being a good parent and having my kids grow up to be good citizens.

I can understand your concerns with being out in the neighborhood--that's not a trust issue, it's more of a safety issue.

The package might have been marked as Adult Signature Required (ASR) -- and if so, she has a valid gripe, and I don't think it has anything to do with child discipline, rules and structure. We're talking apples and oranges here.

And just because there are irresponsible parents who seem to not understand how to properly raise a child (and a media that likes to sensationalize these moments) does not mean that every parent is lazy and irresponsible these days. You hear about the idiots, you don't hear about the ones doing it right. Whiners and the craziest of rules, products and events make the news.

"What is this world coming to" (or something to that effect) has probably been uttered by every aging generation at any given point in history. I've said it myself a bunch of times.

That "drug safe" isn't a bad idea for protecting toddlers that are too young to taught "responsibility".;)

How/why would a toddler have access to begin with?

That wasn't necessary in this situation when I was a kid. If a package came for Mom or Dad, you did not open it, period. We also didn't open their mail. Seemed simple at the time, after all, it was not addressed to me.

like steve was implying, why couldn't one just leave the meds up in a normal medicine cabinet in the bathroom?

But if they are toddlers, why in the world would you have anything like that even remotely close to where they could access it? Can they still access it? Yes, but they are going to have to get really creative and by the time they figure that out, surely you would have found them wondering where in the world they are.

Speaking with a bit of experience, children will get into ridiculous situations if allowed to do so.

My wife and I have 2 kids (5 and 6). We have also brought foster children into our home who are a variety of ages and medications. My kids know right/wrong and not to mess with anything in a bottle, but a lot of these kids don't. We lock them up in a safe deposit box so that they can't be used/abused/stolen/lost. Some kids don't care what it is, it looks like candy, lets eat it. Some know exactly what it is and that you can get some "effects" from taking gobs of them.

You hear stories from time to time of a grandparent who has a grandchild who od'd on their prescription xyz. It is sad, but it can happen. My grandparents left out the plethora of meds they took in a MTWTFSs box that had a square for each day and meal. I can see how it happens that some kids end up eating the "candy" even if it doesn't seem plausible.

It's called "watching" them, HELLO. I know all about kids, I have 2. 26 & 29 now, and when they were toddlers they were either within eyeshot of me or their mom, or in their room playing. Even then I checked on them regularly. I now have 5 grandchildren, and the same rules apply--luckily for me their parents are very good and watchful.
