Seriously everyone should own this cd. If you like intelligent lyrics, a sweet unusual voice, great pop sensibilities without falling into the mainstream crap. This cd is guaranteed to get your toes tapping; if not your dead.

For her fourth album, 2005's WE WILL BECOME LIKE BIRDS, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Erin McKeown hones her pop-rock sound. Whereas her past records veered from jazz to folk to country, BIRDS finds McKeown crafting songs that subtly ... Full Descriptionmix these genres but fall squarely into the melodic rock style of artists like Aimee Mann. McKeown's high, clear, girl-next-door voice is in fine form, bold enough to carry the majestic, opening "Aspera," but nuanced enough for the gentle, acoustic number "Float." McKeown is backed by a top-notch band here that includes renowned session drummer Matt Chamberlain (who has played with Tori Amos) and bassist Sebastian Steinberg (formerly of Soul Coughing). She's also joined by Argentine vocalist Juana Molina (on "The Golden Dream," a gauzy, Wurlitzer-driven number) and the husky-voiced Peter Mulvey (on the spare "Delicate December"). One of McKeown's most confident and cohesive albums, WE WILL BECOME LIKE BIRDS showcases the talents of an artist hitting her stride.

Positively infectious and will put a smile on your face. Just saw (2) of her shows in the past two days and it was among one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time. This girl oozes class and intelligence and crafts some excellent songs with so many influences.

Check it out you won;t be sorry!! I usually don;t get excited about an artist but she really struck a chord with me. After talking a bit with her after the show, it's amazing how much talent and perspective she has and is still flying low under the radar.

We Will Become Like Birds is a full-fledged, richly textured pop record in the tradition of Aimee Mann or Sam Phillips. Soothing acoustic and jangly electric guitars support McKeown's appealingly low-key vocals, with occasional touches like the electric piano underpinning "Delicate December" adding sonic variety. The songs are a varied and melodically sturdy lot that never settle for mere prettiness, with the hard-fought optimism of "Air" and the more downbeat moodiness of "Float" marking the album's emotional poles. The mixed emotions and soaring chorus of the Michael Penn-like closer, "You Were Right About Everything," make it the album's highlight, but the entirety of We Will Become Like Birds is excellent; less bound by genre restrictions than ever before, McKeown has taken the opportunity to soar.

Interesting...you know I'm pretty sure I heard something by her on Yahoo Radio..or some such venue....I even think I wrote her name down because I had no idea who she was and she was one of the 2 or 3 artists that I actually thought about listening to again after a few hours of....whatever they call it....something like the 'yadayada...alternative' channel. A lot of forgettable music there!

Your thread reminded me, I'm going to go back and see if this was the album the piece I heard was from...

    Thanks for the heads up!
