    Wow, Las, that's a monster of an amp...200 watts x 7?

That would be all anyone would need in terms of power, I would think; but those Onkyos he's looking at are pretty kick-****, too, aren't they? I'm not saying they would power his speakers precisely, but they're pretty high up there on Onk's list...

    http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-NR3007&class=Receiver&p=f

Looks like this beast alone is rated at 140 watts a channel...

I wish I could afford something like that 200 x 7 amp, and just hook my receiver up to it as a preamp/processor, but my Onkyo '605 has no preouts, and my '605's power has actually been fine so far for my specific listening room.

That Sunfire has good power....and Sal is right...it would do you fine. But you'd be less out of date with a new Onkyo 1007 or 3007 which have more features than the Sunfire for web related and streaming goodies, etc. Plus NEW processing modes.

But you'd have to buy a power amp to power the LSIs no problem, you can probably pick up a good 2 or 3 channel used for less than 500.

The problem with more expensive AVRs like Sunfire is that they are 'slower' to update themselves than the less "presitigious" and perhaps lower end Onkyo.

The one thing that Onkyo does do right, though, is keep in step with technology. So if HT is a priority...go with the new Onkyos....good Video processing and all the new digital goodies you could ask for...and remember that one of the BEST AVR pres in the business is the Integra....that's an Onkyo line...so there is a 'trickle' down effect from the Integra 9.9 to the Onkyo upper lines?

So if you want the latest and greatest...get the 3007 and a used power amp and you'll be able to do a few things the Carver can't. Even if its amplification is much better.

Wise words cnh .. But whats the diff between the onkyo 707 using a powerful amp and the likes of the onkyo 1007 with an amp ?

To me I would think it best to buy the 707 with a nice amp for the price of the 3007

Whats the deal with companys like sunfire etc still releasing old **** and charging a fortune . These companys are getting kicks to balls by todays technologicaly up to date consumers

I just got my 1007 on Tuesday ($999.99 weekend special from Newegg) and spent two days off from work putting it through its paces. So far, I'm absolutely loving it, and it was a significant step up from the 705 I had before it. My RTi70 and CSi40 sound like different speakers with it, and I'm getting far more cohesive surround from my 4 RTi28s than I ever have. Plus, the thing is just damn easy to use. Connected it to my network, updated the firmware immediately, had internet radio and access to all my MP3s from my computer, and the setup itself was similar enough to my 705 that I was able to just breeze right through it. I have a pair of Monitor 30s coming in today to use as height channels.

Still, you're right to go with an external amp to power 4 ohm speakers. The x007 line will power them, but only by using a current limiter to reduce the heat produced by the additional load on the amp. As far as which you should get between the 1007 and 3007, you might as well save a little money and just get the 1007. Both use the same DACs and have near-identical features, so I imagine you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference if you're using good external amplification.

Once nice benefit of the 1007 for me so far is that when I calibrate my projector to my Oppo BDP-83 and XBox 360, my cable looks a little washed out. Before, I just lived with it. Now, with the ISF controls in the receiver, I can calibrate for the higher black level of broadcast TV just on that input without altering the spot-on 6500k calibration of my projector.

(BTW: The word from Onkyo UK is that a future firmware update will make the x007 series installer-ready for Audyssey Pro. If that ends up being true, $1k for the 1007 may make it the most value-rich proposition in the industry.)

Yeah, wait for the weekend. Last week, the 1007 was $1,500 until Saturday morning, when they dropped that to $999.99. They've been doing that pretty much every weekend for more than a month now.
