I'm a newbie to this site though I have enjoyed reading the posts over the last few months.

I ran across a pair of small Polk bookshelf speakers for $20 at a local SA store and am hoping that someone can point me to some information on them.

They carry no model # or any info except a "Polk Audio CE" on the label by the binding posts. They are 2-ways with a 6-7" woofer and a dome tweeter. They are ported on the back with a raised square plastic plate located about 1" from the port. The cabinets are black wood with a gray grain. Solid and weighty feel, 3-5 lbs each.

I didn't really measure them as I figured they would be easy to research on the web, but nothing comes up in search engines. They are about 10-12" tall, 6-7" wide, 5-6" deep if memory serves.

They may be surround speakers as the have a provision for being hung from a single nail/screw center. They have attached rubber pieces on the lower back to offset the raised plate and make them paralell to a wall if hung from the mount.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hmmm...$20, just buy them. As far as particulars, a picture would help. They could be bookshelf speakers as well as surround loudspeakers. The wall mount and bumpers don't really isolate them into a surround category but it does sound newer.

CE is a mark that means a product has met some certain regulation regarding consumer safety, health, etc requirements, it's not the Polk model designation.

It's sounds like you stumbled on some little R or RT series bookies.

    Cheers,

Too light, too small. It's the rear port that's throwing me - I'm thinking R10, RT15?

R10 for me, based on the bumpers....a pic would save the day.

Thanks for responding. The impeccable logic of "hmmm, $20?, just buy them" had me head back to the SA to see if they were still there.

They were. Turns out that the sticker with the CE also had a barcode and a product identifier. They turned out to be RTi28's with sequential serial numbers.

There was nothing to test them out with at the store so I scooped them up and hoped for the best. Got them home, hooked them up, work just fine.

Impressive little buggers that punch way above their weight. Huge soundstage, lovely imaging, impressive dynamics for such a small box. I later read the Stereophile reviews of the RTi25 and the references to the 28's in the RT4 review and largely agree with their evaluations. Need to play around some more with placement and plan to enjoy doing so.

These are the first Polk's I have owned. Ahhh, the joys of getting a new old toy, and a screaming deal to boot. I cant imagine why someone would just toss these out, but I'm sure glad they did. Now if I can just find at least one more, or better yet, five. They would make a great 7.1 HT setup.
