Yeah, I'm back, you goons.
It was great to see and meet some Polk fanatics at Troy's house this weekend down in sunny Chucktown. I'm glad KAB encouraged me to leave my lair. Putting faces to names is fun, and hearing some awesome soundsystems was even funner. What was in those brownies? Or, was that the Asian pee you made me drink?
Thanks to my new neighbors Tom and Lightman for sharing their deep appreciation of audio nuances, and thanks to Ted for explaining some of it to me. How cool is it that Polk Audio is open to the views and opinions of people who don't even listen to Polk speakers anymore? (Very.) It was great to see Troy and Jesse and Mark, and meet Shack, and the folks who came from Atlanta and from New Jersey (cool cube, Lou!). And everyone whose name I have no recollection of (Dave? George?). And like I have been saying -- someone better start paying attention -- Wendi is a saint and you all (or, y'all) should get some money together and send her on a tropical cruise as recompense for allowing you animals to tear up her house like ya done.
I promise to get more involved here. I'm going to ask Patrick to hunt down files of the DVD and CD reviews we used ages ago in "The Speaker Specialist" newspaper, with their convenient lists of demo tracks and scene numbers; maybe we can start building a new database of demo-centric media for everyone to enjoy. I'll come back to life, and chat about the theater I built and the equipment I'm using now and the constant stream of crummy movies I've been seeing. And I'll be sure to thread-kill on a regular basis just to be annoying.
I expect this place to snap to attention, now, hear me? I'm about to start some threads. And I expect good, thoughtful discussions. And **** jokes. (That'll be a separate thread.)
There's a new sheriff in town. Make it interesting.

Sorry Micah, if your plan is to do any kind of movie reviews and such, you're too late. We have a professional reviewer on board. And he does not like competition._________________________________________________

You mean Mike LoManaco?
We'll work it out. As I said, I'm a fan of his BR reviews. It's important because I'm stuck in the stoneage with mere DVDs. So, we'll have a meeting of the minds, I'm sure.
Or, I'll just kill him and take over. (Just kidding, Mike.)

Micah it was good meeting you at PF this weekend.

The shrimp and grits are definitely considered a reference within my taste pallet. Damn, were they good! Especially with great friends, new friends and great tunes.

Welcome back Micah,,I saw you eyeing those quads.;)JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Gah. Sorry Troy. The Quads sound like half the info is missing. Sell those off. (Great to meet you, George!)
Wendi should post her Shrimp & Grits recipe.

What didn't you like abou the Quads? Although, I will admit that they never were dialed in this w/e.....That was a disappointment to me, some sort of gremlins going on this weekend there.

Troy, just to let you know...he auditioned them with me the first time I listened to them and we both shared the same observations. He never did get a chance to listen to them again after they warmed up and started shining. This didn't occur [to my ears] until after Micah had left.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Just about the time they were sounding balanced and starting to image well ,,someone needed to use the room for a soldering class,, LOL.:)
Seriously,,I thought that they were very "easy" on the ears, with a "warmth",,not bright mind you,but somewhat more intimate comes to mind.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut) -

Tom, actually he did. He came back in Sat. evening (just before the surgery) after we got the cables back in phase, tightened up all the connectors on the speaker cables and they been running for a while and they were sounding as good as they had all day. He still did not particularly like what he heard. I went back late Sat. night after Lightman was kind enough to un-pass-out and vacate the room and they were still having problems. The right channel was cutting out, balance was still not right and the imaging was still very smeared. They had been running continuously for hours at that point. I don't know what the problem was, (speaker, amp) but there was still a problem."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I thought they sounded their best on Sat evening also,, funny thing that I noticed,,people came coming back to that room to listen to them,,over and over. And,, they certainly go much deeper than I ever thought.JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

I really enjoyed listening to the quads. I spent quite a bit of time in there.

Well, they are finicky to be sure...and they aren't for everyone. I've never pegged them as an audiophile speaker. What I DO love about them is that they are musical above all.
That said, I'm disappointed in that rig. I really wished that I had been able to dial them in. Oh well, c'est la vie.
Yes, TLW IS a Saint, I do agree with that.
If Micah is running the show, we'll be talking about snot rockets, money shots and socks before long. Game on!

Hokay...I've been a bit wierded out by the whole Quad thing. ...
I've had them plugged in (up here in NC) overnight...to a Classe solid state amp. Perfect balance...no issues.
So, I'm thinking that I have a bad power tube thing going on with the Heaths. Also, I noticed that the volume knob on the Melos was astronomically high. Now, the Quads simply do not play loud....and we are talking about ~20wpc amps (and the Quads do like a little juice). So, I'm thinking that what you guys were hearing were simply over driven. The cutting out? That was the speaker protection circuitry kicking in.
No harm...just glad that I don't APPEAR to have an issue with the speakers.

Troy, it very well could have been something wrong with one of the amps. Ben LIKED the Quads and when we (Ben and I) were sitting listing the right channel was cutting out. I do not believe we were pushing them too hard at the time...in fact they were at a fairly low level as I recall. At times the right channel seem to be totally overpowering the left...so much so that folks were wondering if the left was even playing until they moved closer. I noticed that something that should have been localized seemed to be spread across the entire soundstage. I wondered at the time if you could be having a tube issue. Again...I don't think they were pushed too hard...at least not when I was in the room.
I'm glad the Quads are ok. It was still good to listen to them...even if there were a few issues from time to time. I especially enjoyed some of your vinyl on the Scoutmaster."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Yeah, I betting on tubes....like I said, I was just disappointed.
We'll figger it out.

yea I heard the imbalance and all that.........the Quads are sexy musical in such an intimate non-slamming way, I definetely got it though as far as their sound.
man Polk should bring back the newspaper, it was uber cool, I still have copies.

They were extremely intimate with the vinyl front end that Troy has.:)JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut) -

I liked it as well...but newspapers are going the way of the dinosaur. It was around 2-3 years ago that Polk started putting out a digital newsletter. I didn't like it as well as the newspaper, but it too is gone."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

GD if I ever got my honey alone in there the door would be bolted and Mehta's violin would not be the only thing hitting the spot...........they have a certain quiet musical subtleness about them which is hard to define but easy on the ear bone.

Bumpity, bumpity, bump, bump.....
MC had a pretty stellar idea about compiling demo tracks and extracting info out of the old Speaker Specialists.....anyone at HQ Polk listening?
Where is Micah? YOOHOO!
Also, still thinking back to that PF.....I'm still disappointed in how the Quad rig sounded. I mean, it took some time but figured out the issue which was an amp. That was just super frustrating for me.............but the alcohol cushioned the blow. That and the shrimp and grits.
