Thinking about buying this TV

So what do you video gurus think about this LCD tv and the price for value. I realize this is not anywhere near a TOTL TV but I rarely even watch TV in fact most weeks I only remember to turn the damn thing on once or twice, and I also rarely watch DVD's other than music videos. I have discovered as I get older that my eyesight isnt as good as it used to be and I have been having problems with viewing my 15" computer monitor so this will double as a monitor for my PC also.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I wouldn't recommend a Sharp to someone I had on my **** list. Seriously one of the worst pictures I've ever seen on an HD channel. I'd go with an entry level Samsung or Sony if you need LCD. Otherwise, get a Panasonic or Samsung plasma for cheap. Better picture by a long shot and usually a lot cheaper.

Best Buy has the Panasonic on sale. The 42 inch plasma for 499. I would not go with Sharp. I find that the Dynex Best Buy brand is nicer, the newer ones.

unfortunatley the nearest Best Buy is 357 miles from me, there are a few plasma's 720p models coming up for sale at sears on BF and a LCD or two perhaps it would be best to wait till then.

Hell, the Vizio's are nicer than the Sharp but without a repair shop in the US of A, kinda worry about their reliability or service after the fact. Or they added a few servicers over the past year that I'm unaware of. Look into other models at Walmart or Sears that's local to you. Don't shop features or prices online until you know what you're looking for. Viewing a picture is always the best way to buy. Just be sure to look at the settings to know if something is running "hot" for the brightest picture on the shelf.

I like my Sharp, had the best picture in my price range when i purchased it. AFAIK we can thank Sharp for bringing the LCD to us....

For $500 i'd be on that like white on rice! In fact if it was available here for that price i'd probably grab 2 lol :)

Just to add i am just about on everyone's "**** list" :D

Hmmm.... Well I have been waiting for years for prices to drop to what I felt was a reasonable level for an HDTV for a couple of reasons, until last year there was no Hi Def programing available here at any price via any method cable sattelite or over the air so it didnt make economic sense to purchase a Hi Def TV that I couldndt use and with the format wars and connection issues component DVI HDMI- 1-2-3 it didnt seem to make sense to purchase a TV that may have obsolete connections in a few years so I am not in any hurry to purchase a Hi Def TV.

I have a good job and can afford to purchase virtually any TV available but as mentioned earlier I rarely watch TV so having bragging rights that I own the best or most expensive TV isnt something that appeals to me but I would like to get something that is a good value.

As far as this model having the best picture I am under no illusions that for $500.00 it will but if it had as good a picture as similar priced models then it may be an option. Toxis mentioned earlier to go to the stores and compare for myself which is probablly the best advice yet, one of the things I have noticed from glancing at a few models at a few places is that it seems most TV's are not set up very well if at all I stopped at my local sams club the other day and half the TV's in the place were not even hooked up or turned on, how the hell do you expect many sales this way is a mystery to me.

BTW what did you do to get on peoples **** list? disagree with popular oppinions like in this thread or what? :D

I'M a Plazma fan myself, I have an older 50" Panasonic and it still looks good, + the veiwing angle is extremely wide. I was in PC Richards the other day and saw an LED TV for the first time, it was a very impressive picture, Very deep colors and almost lifelike.

I won't be parting with my Panni anytime soon, but for the best bang for the buck I still think the plasma's have the edge.

    Ya i don't like kool-aid lol :p

If you have a Futureshop/BestBuy in your area set aside a couple hour's and do some viewing, that's what i did :) I wouldn't buy a screen without viewing it first, as in audio TV picture quality is subjective as well ;)

Well I went and looked at TV's today including the afore mentioned Sharp LCD and didnt buy anything, They were all out of the Sharp LCD other than the floor model, from what the gal told me there was a long line at opening time to purchase the few they had in stock. The picture quality wasnt as good on it as the ones on either side of it but not awful either.

I went to Sears to glance around also and it appears that the Panasonics had the worst picture of anything in the store but that may have been due to not being adjusted properly, from what I could see the plasmas looked the best on most models but the LCD's were very close on some and better than a few of the plasmas.

I did seem to notice that the 720p Plasma models didnt appear to be as good as most of the 1080p LCD's but that may be due to newer technology.

One thing is sure I need at least a 40" TV 32"-37" were too small, So I will keep my eye out and once I see a decent deal I will snap one up

Skip the Sharp. Pick up this top ranked TV. Sony Bravia KDL-40V5100. Yes, it's more expensive but keep your eyes peeled for black Friday sales and my guess is you can find one with a free BD player or another hundred bucks less.

Consider the Samsung LN40B500 for $650.

I understand that Sears will have this available on Black Friday for about $600.
Thanks. The Samsungs had some of the nicest pictures of the ones I seen.

Well I am definitely going to avoid the Sharp that I seen at Walmart today, though I seen a Sharp Aquos at Sam Club that looked pretty damned good it was priced at $2900.00 or so It must have been a far more advanced LCD.

One thing I noticed at Sears was the absence of model #s on the tags which kinda makes it tough to internet compare but I could always get a sales associate to help me I suppose but I hate wasting some poor **** time when he could be waiting on someone that is commited to purchase something then and there.

Not sure why the plasmas were looking so dismal to you, for my taste they always look better than LCD. Anyway as you already see the video side is just as subjective as audio.

Since Sears is one of your options: 42' Panny link
I think they are on sale for $570 for a week or 2 more. They get pretty good ratings, not as good as the TH line or the TC G10 displays but not at the same cost either. Even with your lack of interest in watching a lot of TV I still think I would look for a deal on a: Panasonic Viera TC-P46G10 or see if you could find some older stock 720P TH models.

Other than true 1080P sources like BR for displayes in the 42" class 720P should not look any different than the 1080P and with 42" and average viewing distances even with 1080P sources it should be hard to tell the difference.

Well it's hard to judge in a single visit considering that most of the ones I seen were way out of adjustment for the setting they were in, colors were way too much on some, others it looked like the contrast was set way too high. I really need to go back and spend a few hours getting one of the sales people to compare 3-4 of the ones I am interested in side by side whether they be plasma or LCD and playing with the settings until I get them as good as I can then make a choice but I swear time and again the pannys were the worst in the store and the Sony Bravia I looked at compared to the Samsung next to it wasnt even close.

I want to stay in the $500 to $700 range but if I see something that is far superior for up to 1k I will get it, perhaps I am being unrealistic trying to stay under a grand but as little as I watch TV I cant see paying more and I dont see my habits changing even with a better quality picture except now I will use it more simply because I intend to use whatever I get as my new PC monitor my old one is too small for my tired old eyes :p

I didnt spend much time there the other day just glanced around to get a feel for prices and brands. I cant be sure if one of the panasonics was a viera or not or even a plasma for that matter but I will spend some more time there soon and do some heads up comparasions even though it appeared to me that the 1080p LCD's looked better than "most" of the plasmas I looked at they may well have been priced higher also to be fair I will have to take 3-4 of the ones I think are the best options and play with the adjustments. I am not stuck one either format and may the best TV win :D
