I really enjoyed a set of Telefunken 12AX7's in mine. Next were a set of GE 5751's. Have fun. Thats a pretty flexible and user friendly phono preamp. Be careful of the gain settings. I played with my gain settings both for MM & MC until I found the level I liked. I kept the impedence and capacitance as what was called for by the cart manufacturer. I think I may have swapped back and forth from 200pf and 150pf at times.

Edit...when playing with the gain settings switch back and forth from the high and low outputs on the rear when switching the gain DIP switches.

OOPS I guess I should have posted the home page, here you go. Brent told me if I order tubes and are not satisfied with the sound can return them and try out another set or pay a nominal re-stocking fee. Pretty good deal I think.

Looking at pulling the trigger on a set of Bugle boy 12ax7's is $120 ea. to much for them?

They are new old stock matched pair.

    Tool,

Sorry I can't help with the choice of 12AX7's. Typically Bugle Boys are very good........be careful there are some fakes going around. That seems high to me @ $120ea, but again I buy the less popular 12AT7's.

Here's a good resource and I believe he describes what to look for in the fakes.

My favorite 12AT7 variant is the Telefunken ECC801s. The same Telefunken variant is available for the 12AX7 it's the ECC803s. They are rare and expensive, but damn!!!!! do they sound fantastic!!!!

    NOS with boxes about $350-400/pr.

There may be other 12AX7's or variants that are a better value, I just am not as up on those since I don't use them.

Did Cilantro have some Amperex versions/varients for sale recently? Or maybe I have them confused with another tube?

    Hey guys - hey George!

I currently have a large batch of Amperex 12AX7s made in holland; halo getter and labeled for Electrohome. I put one pair on Audiogon and they really won't last at $99. : ) That's a Polkie price for sure!

I saw some of the ECC803 Teles go for 1200 about 6 months ago. Yikes!

You can get the ECC801 for maybe 300-400 as someone said.

    Happy holidays!
