well after months of aggravating HDMI issues with my new TV i think i may have stumbled across the right process for minimal frustrations.

so the handshake between my oppo and mits were erratic dropping out every other day or so and having to reset the TV to sync back up after a trip to service center and no problems (with what seems to be cheap bd players) i have found that this combination works.
1) give the oppo limited cec control in the hdmi setup
2) turn my TV on to watch directv
3) (after directv is up and running) turn on oppo, with the limited control it than talks to the mits and changes it to the correct input.

so for the last few days doing it this way i have not had to reset my TV to see the oppo. so knock on wood and pray to the electronic gods. this i can live with lol :D

Have you posted over at AVS in BDP-83 owners thread or contacted Oppo about this problem? Other owners with the same problem may really appreciate it. This might be fixable in firmware.
That said, HDMI handshake issues are a huge PITA. I'm glad you found the magic combo that works for you. I have been very lucky so far.

I'd much rather deal with the old fashioned but reliable lots of wires to everything, but get everything I need without all the BS of HDMI!

    Sorry to hear your issues.

If I were you I would get rid of the HDMI and go with component or DVI and digital coax cables. Yes I have a few more cables behind my rack of equipment but I have no issues with my stuff not talking to each other.

I am glad I never hopped on board the HDMI train wreck!

When HDMI works, it's a beautiful thing. Operative word is "when". I have had exactly zero problems. But I feel for those that do.

Just for information purposes, the BDP-83 must to be hooked up via HDMI in order to take advantage of the ABT VRS processing. "If" you are hooked up via component... no upscaling/deinterlacing. So there are compelling reasons to use HDMI for video output at least. You can disable HDMI audio and use the player to decode HiRes audio.

Did not know that about the OPPO. I did have the OPPO on my list of BR players that I might end up buying but that might just knock them off the list.

Better knock all the other brands off as well. Their processing won't do 1080p over component either. It's not allowed due to HDCP.

Or you could just try HDMI, I've never had a single issue with it, using at least 6 different players and three different processors. Although the Onkyo 885 did switch HDMI in slow motion.

    Here is the FAQ info

Be sure to do your research. You may be surprised at the price you'll pay for the same level of video processing (SOTA) in another player. Also, 1080i (interlaced) is all you'll ever get out of a component connection.

    Doh!

You may want to note that only non-encrypted SD DVD's can be scaled via component as well. Easily overcome with some rip/burn but a PITA nonetheless.

ain't that the truth.. during my trouble shooting i did hook everything back up with component and i contemplated going back to component but when you see the hdmi pic it is so nice.

good idea about contacting oppo for firmware didn't even think about that possibility couldn't hurt

Thanks. They have been actively chasing down handshake issues and seem to have most of them quashed. Have you updated the player firmware since you got it?

oppo got back with me and gave me a great explanation on hdmi hand shaking. explaining that it works best when the TV is on first basically what i am doing but without getting a handshake from the TV first. they said they would work on it in there facility and see if they can replicate. what a great company. when i get back on my main PC i will post the email that was sent to me

this is the response from oppo:
Generally, with these kind of HDCP handshaking errors, turning on the television, changing inputs to the one the player is assigned to, then turning on the player should resolve a proper HDCP handshake. We have not seen a scenario where a HDCP hanshake has to be first established by another device before it works with the BDP-83.

Ensure that your BDP-83 is using the 40-0925 Firmware, as this firmware was designed to improve HDCP and other HDMI handshakes.

We will attempt to replicate your issues in house and see what we can't do to improve the performance with a future firmware release.
