Any rule of thumb for the main speakers and center speaker level adjustment,
or do you adjust to what sounds good to your ears.

Thanks for the help...

Trust your ears. They do not lie.

Hearing is believing. My Pioneer Elite has automatic speaker set up. I ran it and then tweaked it to what sounded to me.

I set all speakers so it is the same volume with an SPL meter. The only speaker level I adjust to taste from there is the sub.

For some movies I may adjust the center channel up a notch or two - but by default - the center is the same level as the fronts and surrounds.

You really want your fronts and rear speakers adjusted as close in volume to each other as possible. (and don't be tempted to move it so you hear the surrounds more) If they are not the same, things just won't sound right as they pan from the front to the back (or vice versa).

    AMEN.

Even with an SPL meter I run my surrounds and subwoofer hotter than the rest.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
